Hi guys, silly question :P But is there anything I can do to eke out an extra mpg or two on my 2001 3.2 v6? Apart from the obvious regular servicing and leaving it parked in the garage, lol. Are there any changes I can make? I'm a novice with the Omega's so any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

I'm sure someone will recommend LPG and that wouldn't be a bad idea if your using it as your main daily car. Or just buy something smaller for the daily stuff and use the Omega for long journeys , weekends, summer etc :)

Insure that;
multi rams work.
Exhaust isn't blocked.
Cam timing is cock on.
Insure all extra weight is out of the car.
Pressures are good er ing on the high side
Lpg it.
Drive with minimal braking, ie, off the gas early and coast up to the junction etc. use the auto box minimal engine braking to your advantage.

Good point. You do need to do the miles to warrant lpg outlay.

superunleaded. Got me 10% more mpg in a V6 2.5 and its not 10% more expensive.
You could also try thinner oil eg 5W30.

Good point... I always reckon on about 30p per mile on petrol from mine (and about 21p now on LPG) :-\

It's the only way to create accurate results, and 'about' takes on a whole new level of importance when discussing mpg on Omegas :D

Thanks guys, the way I have been measuring is as soon as the fuel light comes on I set the trip meter to zero and put in 10 litres (not £10), then drive until the fuel light comes on again, I did this religiously for 2 weeks and it always measured in at 30 to 32 miles before the fuel light came on again.

Fair enough. I wouldn't put too much faith in the light, but your results are certainly consistent.
At a tenner, I would have said it was about right, but with another third on top I would expect a bit more :(

if its auto, convert to manual.. if most of your commute is urban your consumption will drop.. there are some mechanics here who converts them..

I'm getting about 25 miles to a tenner (17mpg ish) with mine and I don't mess about ;)
Check the multirams ect imo :)

100 miles costs me around £12, £14 if town work, with summer tyres on (uh-oh!) got around 412 miles to a tank (74L/£50) of gas.

I finished the back end of the lpg conversion 3 weeks ago but due to wind / rain / snow / taxi service for the missus or my own work, its gone no further :'(
What i'd do for a garage to work in. All my work is carried out on the road outside my house :(
Anyway, enough moaning, the sun is out :-X so I've got a gearbox oil filter clean / flush and a selector to abuse clean and setup :)

I found this after wanting to make my own way that pre-heated my engine to save a lot of fuel and reduce engine damage. Not a new idea in itself I know but was googling after designing some things and trying to find a way of using the electric pumps connected to our cooling systems and discovered this.
They seem to make sense and could save me £30/week if they do as they say on the tin. The company told me that the oil never gets baked on to the sump. The only problem is miggies are quite low and we have rather a lot of speed humps on our roads so they could get scrapped off.
Could even put one on the gearbox sump.
I'm also looking at ways to pre-heat the air intake between the air filter and MAF so the ECU is "tricked" in to reducing the fuel injected.
Any thoughts? Just don't shoot the messenger :)

122 miles from the last £40 (£1.37). Driven gently due to suspension issue, but biggest culprits have to be a failed thermostat and low ambient temperatures :-\ between -3° and +4° lately.

in addition to chris gixers post as to what cud also be the culprit....
vacuum leak
faulty maf sensor
faulty coolant temp sensor
faulty thermostat
faulty o2 sensor
leaking exhaust/exhaust manifold
timing out

About right for an auto in urban traffic.
Christ, I only managed 15mpg over an entire tank earlier in the week, and that was in open countryside

How does that compare with the avg MPG on the Multi Information Display? You can reset that at any time, it then calculates your avg MPG from then on. Many here don't trust it but I have found the MID accurate to under 1 mile on the range function, tested 3 or 4 times on two different migs. If you don't trust it the fuel light will be no better, probably worse in fact, and brim to brim is the only way.
