Title: V6 engine swap: Looking for practical tips for removal and refitting
Post by: sjc on 30 March 2013, 09:38:44
As title really...

I'm about to do an engine swap on my MVElite6.  Going from 3L V6 Auto to 3L V6 manual.

Any of you guys got any tips for removal and re-fitting of the lump?  Not worried about the connections as such, just the physical aspect of getting the lump out and back in.

I've removed several Carlton/Senator/Omega engines before but the shells were being crushed and I just dropped the front clip out.  This time an engine needs to go back and I don't want to disturb the sub-frame or damage the bonnet slam panel.

Will be with box attached and I have an engine crane.  Pedal box and clutch master cylinder will be fitted with engine out because access will probably be easier.

As always, advice greatly appreciated!

When I lifted the engine out of my old 2.5 V6 manual I removed the gearbox first. I had a miserable job getting to all the bell-housing bolts and lying on my back trying to reattach the gearbox after was even worse.

If I do it again I will definitely lift them out together but the car needs to be raised to allow the nose of the gearbox to swing down and the engine crane needs to be able to safely lift the surprisingly heavy engine + gearbox above head height.

I didn't find the 3rd lifting eye until the engine was out (it is part of the bracket that the DIS is bolted to and is hidden under a plastic cover that various electrical connectors clip on to)

have just done exactly that today....

it makes absolutely no difference doing the pedals and clutch master with engine in or out - the engine is not in the way at all. The most of it is under the dash.

its definitely easier doing engine and gearbox as one lump - its easily possible with the subframe still in place. And you don't need to jack the car, either.

Make sure that you tie the lifting rope very close to the top of the plenum chamber - ideally within an inch ( quite hard to do ). Make sure that you use all three lifting points, which will make the angle-of-dangle easier to achieve. Do this right and you don't even need to disconnect the bonnet stays.

the one thing that you'll ,miss is that the rear screws holding the aluminium part of the sump will try to share the same space as the subframe and steer tie-rod.

make sure to remove the propshaft, gear linkage, downpipes and gearbox cross-member from the car completely, and don't try to just disconnect at one end.

when going back in, driver's side engine mount bolts to the engine before lowering in and the opposite with the passenger side.

I just put my engine and box in attached. Was pretty straight foward. The way we done it was hook it so when the engine is lifted its already angled down at the box end. Dip it into engine bay with bonnet off. Jack the car up and put on axle stands. Then one person jacked the back of the gearbox up as the other guided it onto the mounts.  :y
