All pie in the sky but I've got a mate who owns a garage. He has sat on the shelf an GM tech 2. It's been there since he took on the garage. He says it doesn't work and has offered it to me but I haven't a clue who to take it to for repair. I don't know nothing more than that about it. So before I part with a good price for it can anybody tell me where it can be repaired.

Don't pay too much mate - this one is on fleabay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ORIGINAL-VAUXHALL-OPEL-GM-SUZUKI-SAAB-TECH2-TECH-2-TECH-2-/200908861403?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item2ec719efdb (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ORIGINAL-VAUXHALL-OPEL-GM-SUZUKI-SAAB-TECH2-TECH-2-TECH-2-/200908861403?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item2ec719efdb)

Well all I can say is I'm looking at paying that price........ minus the 1 at the front and less 199 quid.

At that price I Think I'd be willing to take a punt... Might be something simple :-\

Yep. It's worth it. I know it's got lots of leads and vauxhall modules. However it be a whole lot better if I can get it fixed
-
Bargain :y
Hope you get it working ok mate

What kind of batteries does Tech2 use?
If NiCd they don't take kindly to being left discharged. Might be as simple as replacing a battery pack if it had been left unused for some time before your mate tried to use it :-\

The dont have batteries - they take the power from the diag socket :y

Ahh. Scratch that theory then ::)
Start off by checking for cable damage and blown fuses.

I'm thinking that it hasn't been tried on a car so has no power :-X ::) Hence why I'd definitely have a punt!

Don`t know anything about these guys, but they do a lot of advertising on ebay regarding repairing of Tech2

Parts tend to be dear. The 32Mb card, for example, is around £300 - I've bought enough of the frakkers. Thats for a known working pattern. Its fusy on the type, have the correct spec is no guarantee it will work, sadly.
Some of the caps on the main board fail, sometimes taking out other things. Keyboards fail, as the ribbons degrade. Main lead tends to get pulled, and fail.
Could be anything.

That's great but who fixes them? Surely garages don't just throw them in the bin?

Why not. Tax deductable, and not a particularly expensive garage item ;)

I put a new keypad on mine a year or two ago. Think it cost me £120 for the part.
If the cash is not too much of a problem then start low and see what the fella wants. You might just get a bargain that simply needs a clean. ;)

There not hard to fix and bits can be got although the costs for the spares can be high.

Right I have the tech 2 here. However I think it is nothing more than a source of spare parts. There's no card in the top and at the bottom there's just a empty slot. Lot's of interfaces and leads but the actual main lead is missing. I think what I've got is 3 systems which have been junked together in a box. There's a tech 1 reader here. That works except the main lead is once again missing and being a Tech1A the plug for the main lead is different to my Tech1 . I also have 3 modules which look like they are an interface for a laptop based system. So all in all scrap apart from maybe the Tech 1A. If I get get the proper lead for the tech1a I'll flog that on. I know I can reprogram one of the many cartridges which are with it to work with The Lotus Carlton so hopefully that will open it up to another market. It does have the mass storage cartridge which I understand to be worth a few quid I'll get some pictures up. I've had a look on Ebay (including the american site) for leads but not winning at the moment. The Tech1A seems to be much rarer than your common garden normal Tech1 :-\ :-\

Missing vehicle module. Ouch. No idea on cost.
The 32Mb card is about £300 - I've had to buy loads of these.
-
Is there any reason why you've had to buy so many memory cards?

Like most early flash technologies (and more modern ones ;D), they ain't the most reliable... ...and being linear, not ata, no scope for mapping out bad parts.
