If its anything like mine, make sure its fully home.
It may look like it's in place but give it a little push to make sure it's seated properly that fixes mine when it plays up.

Remove any DVD emulation or 'region adjusting' software, and try again...

ive a feeling nero has done this, i re installed it yesterday.

Yup, that has a CD Emulator

what op system (windows??)
Edit
If its xp nero can cause registry issues giving your symptoms - try MS Autofix http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=C680A7B6-E8FA-45C4-A171-1B389CFACDAD&displaylang=en

If its Vista try the following -
Run regedit - click start, run, type regedit
Click to expand HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Click on the key {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - check carefully u have correct one!
On the right hand panel look for "UpperFilters" and/or "LowerFilters"
Highlight and right-click on both one by one (if they are both present) Select Delete and click OK to the warning message
Do exactly the same for the following keys-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet1\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet2\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Close REgedit - menu, select Exit
Open Device Manager and, if present, delete any entries for CD/CVD drives and then restart the system
You should now be ok
If u are unhappy using regedit pm me your email address and i'll send u a script to do this.

Did u do the reg changes etc i suggested?
-
yes m8, did them and nothing happened, re booted a few times after and no change. then this morning i put lappy on and it was there. back where it belongs now ive got loads of 80s soul on my mp3 in the car.
its odd it happened as its done it before and went back to normal after the changes.
one of lifes mysteries i think.

Your problem is a known problem with Windows/Roxio or Adaptec software - when the latter is uninstalled and reinstalled. Started as a big issue in Win 2000. To a lesser degree can also happen with Nero under same circumstances. Continued into XP, despite MS knowing about the problem - they issued Autofix which fixed this + other CD/DVD issues in W2000 & XP. Apparently it has also contined into Vista - usually a driver reinstall cures. Autofix wont work with Vista as the relevent registry keys have "moved"
Anyway glad its ok now.
