Title: looks like im stuffed help advice
Post by: elitedave on 08 April 2013, 14:53:03
car is min face lift 3l elite t reg

just had a fun break down iv 40 miles from home
was traveling from luton to Harlow.
to girlfriends place

just coming in to Harlow and lost power steering bad on duel carriageway on an over take absolutely none at all

looked at dash and battery light is lit stop temp jumps sky hi
re steering iv already fixed abs unit once and relay behind glove box at different times
cam belt and water pump only done a few thousand ago

the car wont restart battery is dead was fine fully charged when i left

there's water spraying fast out of top hose after its cooled down iv manged to have a look

there is a small hole and crack on plastic end of radiator by top hose so it needs a new radiator

water and steam has sprayed over battery etc iv dried it all and checked all fuse under bonnet and in car

i boged  up hose and refilled water and jump  started it

just to get last 2 min drive to girl friends but it still appears to be trying to over heat with water

battery light is still on and abs and ignition is flickering and now power steering
engine seems OK bit ruff on tick over but im guessing or hoping that's due to battery being totally flat flat

iv got a laptop Chinese gizmo we cant talk about here but that's in luton

im going to have to pay if i get back to mine tomorrow as breakdown cover lapsed

now im not Shaw if its even worth towing home as got no idea whats up can change radiator in half an hour but with steering and other stuff now not got a clue

any one got any thorts ideas where to start
thanks guys

Water pump, power steering pump and alternator all run from the auxiliary belt so check that hasn't snapped

sounds like your auxilary belt has parted company ;)

opps spot on how did i miss that im way stressed lost our dog last week had bad week

only problem is was on duel carriage way and i couldn't stop for a few hundred yard

but iv missed belt was bit shook up losing steering

after i refiled it i manged to drive it a bit about half a mile

and was getting very hot
what the chances of engine being stuffed or me getting away with it

was running and sounding ok apart from lumpy tick over but battery's totally flat

i take you need a tentioner to change it as well

nope tensioner is a 15mm bolt iirc, put spanner on and go to tighten and will allow belt to be flicked back on when replaced

You will also need a 13mm small socket for the SAI bracket that needs temporarily removing to fit new belt :y

Just make sure it's not a seized tensioner that has caused the belt to snap. In fact it's worth giving all the pulleys a spin just to make sure ;)

adey2 thanks mate that would have been a nivce jestor m8 i wish id have noticed early when was stoped and not refilled it and moved half a mile

OK plan is i got a mate with a tow truck see if i can get back tomorrow
as i got no tools here really

ill tape radiator with self amalgamating tape and some hot glue
hope that should hold before i pay out for new radiator to putt a new belt on and test it and see if its not cooked

ifs OK ill drop a new radiator in

any one got a idea what the chance of me having cooked it are.

It's hard to say. The only way for sure is to put a new belt on it, try it and keep your fingers crossed :y

Exact same happened to me , i was doing 75 ish coming back from scotland , smelt something burning but carried on , then all dash lights glowing like a scene out of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS and no power steering ::) with aux belt bouncing underneath the car  ;D RAC said your head gasket has blown  >:( I took the pulley off and re-greased it + new belt and was good again  :)

hi guys got new belt and pulleys on I could not
drop new radiator in yet as bottom sensor on radiator had welded its self to nut in radiator

and the bloody little vacuum box/chamber  that bolts on back of plastic guiltily ram thing  that air box gos to and maf sensor in in and the rubber piped from throttler body's go to what ever you call it the dam stork fell of due to it being brittal fell off

and cant get one to bloody Friday

when it is back together is  there anything specific worth looking at with the dongle and the laptop  to give idea of engine condition
