is that a sure sign of hg failure and also water loss(no visable signs of leak) and temp rising and falling. if so I'm going to be busy the next day or so :'(
2.0 pfl if that helps
also do I have to replace head bolts what would happen if I didn't replace them?
-
It could be something as simple as an airlock, similar symptoms...
Out of interest have you changed/flushed the coolant recently :-X
-
Shouldn't you do a leak down test to confirm it's the HG?
-
If you can smell exhaust fumes in your expansion tank, a compression test would confirm hg failure ;)
-
When you torque the bolts they stretch so if you reuse the old ones you are asking for trouble.
Plenty of tests you can do to confirm, a cold and warm leak-down test is a good start. On the 2.0 a HG repair is pretty easy and can be done in a day (providing the head doesn't need a little skim)

right went out to have a look today filled the expansion tank up and within 20mins on tick over it was almost empty no visable signs of a leak anywhere and I have a grey blue smoke from exhaust. I only changed hg less than 2 years ago but all signs lead to hg :(
-
Is there more moisture coming from the exhaust than usual? If so with the blue smoke coming from the exhaust I would suspect the HG.
