Title: Garages and their tools
Post by: Webby the Bear on 09 April 2013, 20:07:06
Hi guys,

As above I understand that when you go in to a garage you got to provide your own tools even if it's a big dealership.

This I find really odd but nevertheless it means that the tools I buy from now on should be good quality and with a view to them lasting as long as possible.

SO my question for this evening... do I need to provide EVERYTHING including jack, jack stands? if so, and conveniently I was going to upgrade those when I got paid this month, so I think I got my jack sorted... low profile jobbie from Costco which I believe Mr Gixer has.

but stands.... are these any good.... 3 tonne each, look sturdy and at good price......

Its normally just hand tools. Normally specialist tools like diagnostics are supplied.

The way it works at our Tony's place is hand tools air ratchets etc are bought by the mechanic himself. Jacks hydraulic presses ramps and so on are supplied by the garage owner. Oh and he's just bought himself a new toolbox. You don't want to know what the list price of that was.

on topic, I still find it bizarre why you have to provide your own tools. any reason why the likes of vx would expect you to?

Those tool cabs are horrendously expensive (just like the rest of their gear) but it does look good and he got it for a very good price.

to be fair i'm old enough to not be bothered with brand stuff. i'd be quite happy with the same thing without the brand for prob a fraction of the price  :y still very very nice though  :y :y :y

The reason that garages dont supply tools is if you all need the hammer,or tools going missing and people blaming each other for the losses and tidying up.

this may be a bit lazy but I like the Halfords kit in the carry case....all the t=hand tools you could need right to hand when doing any job. wonder if these are used by any mechanics instead of just DIYers?  :-\

Generally very pleased with Halfords Pro stuff, yes its built to a price but for what you get is very good and life time warranty.

Only that animal Omegatoy managed to snap a hex socket  ::)

I've also got their big tool chest thing,

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_206443_langId_-1_categoryId_255214 (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_206443_langId_-1_categoryId_255214)

Again feels well made, can't complain really!

We'd all like a Snap on box tool box full of tools. I use Halfords pro range and have so far not had a failure. However I do like Kamaza and when I want some snap on stuff ebay is your friend. Plenty good stuff second hand.

You need to be looking at multiple brands if going Pro and not much of the Halfords stuff will tick that box as the spanners are a bit thin and the ratchets flimsy

I really like the Teng spanners and sockets, Irwin do good vice grips, get a good range of hammers with decent wooden handles then your onto air tools and more specialist

That's true about the spanners. Was considering a set of fat flare wrenches to go with the spanners.

You want a set of offset ring spanners to, the flare spanners will be needed for brake pipes but beware cheap ones as they tend to spread if put under any real load

Probably 90% of my stuff is Britool. I found them to be very good over the years, so much so I gave my son a lot of it when he started his apprenticeship and he is working on plant equipment.

ShameBritool have been taken over by Facom, it is reasonable now but not as good as it once was.

My 3 Britool torque wrenches have been heavily used over the past 30 years and are still going strong. Got to test them on a torque tester about 18 months ago and they where virtually spot on, they only one slightly out was the 3/4 drive by about 1lb. Then it has had some abuse on rather tight stuff  ;) like vw hub nuts.

You may not need them but if you do buy a set then I can vouch for these ,

I ordered them in UK on Tuesday and they arrived here in Ireland yesterday , Thursday .
I went for the 6 ton for the height they gave when extended . Incredible quality .
