ok so it's just developed a missfire under any load at all. feels like it is missing quite badly so I am guessing 2 cylinders
my money is on dis-pack - am I right or barking up the wrong tree?
not looked at anything yet but thinking of pulling thre plugs out to see if two are wet.
-
what engine??
-
2.5 V6. i could have sworn my profile said that - now it doesn't!!!
-
check for oil in plug wells
-
cam covers recently done so it shouldn't be that but will do
-
Check in this order:
Plug wells for any oil....condition of plugs...age/condition of plug leads ..and finally the dispack
Finding one of the above is not conclusive that something else is at fault but that gives you the starting point.
If you have no history of when plugs were last replaced as they are the cheapest might be worth replacing as a matter of course. If oil in plug wells expect that leads have been "deep fat fried" and if scuttle is leaking the dispack could be the fault.
From your description it certainly sounds ignition related so try the above first :y

many thanks. plugs are good and it feels like more than one plug so I am looking away from that
plug leads are a good though but again feels like more than one plug so points me away from that
breathers/ oil wells. gaskets done by me recently so shouldn't be but that is a good one to check
thanks all. I'll get to work on it soon ( as i can)

The dispack failing would normally effect 2 cylinders, but worth while removing it for a decent check over if you are unsure of its age/condition.
-
could also be worth checking the fuel filter...when was it last changed, do you often run the tank very empty, etc
-
so latest update is no oil in plug wells.
not got to dis pack yet but am close to it.
question: are pattern dis packs ok (such as intermotor) or is it recommended to go for bosch/GM
similarly for plugs leads: are pattern ok or is there a brand to avoid
-
As with most things...especially those you don,t want to be replacing again...buy the best you can afford.
For me I would only buy a genuine Bosch dispack ,but would look at probably OEM plug leads as VX genuine are probably more than most of our cars are now worth assuming you can still get them.
Try Autovaux or Vauxhall Parts Warehouse as both sell fair quality stuff at sensible prices

quick update. thanks for all your help. was the dispack - two of the three coils had made an escape bid, one quite badly. Surprising it still ran...
currently on a cheapie " cadic" coil pack which seems fine
