We have done less than 1000 miles this year since the last oil change. Do I need to do it again or will it be ok for another year.
-
If your doing a lot of short runs a year i would.
-
Always sooner rather than later
I used to do mine every 3 months or 6k, what ever come sooner. A bit excessive but for the cost of the oil and filter ( it had the filter adaptor to allow ordinarily style filters) it made me sleep easier :D :D
-
Yup, needs to be done at least annually
-
Just my opinion but I wouldn't, subject to a visual check of it but I imagine it is very clean. If it's mineral base then its millions of years old anyway and if its synthetic it will last a lot more than a year at that mileage. I have a 4 cyl diesel genny that gets used a few hours a year and I keep fully syn in it and it doesn't need changing years at a time. If you had year old oil unused in its container would you throw it out? Do oils have sell by dates on them?

dbdb- more technical crap (your term). Frequent short trips allow water, fuel and acids to build up in the oil, and sludge and varnish to form in the engine due mainly to the oil not coming up to full operating temperature. The best way to get rid of these harmful contaminants is change the oil. Happens to a lesser extent with fully synths but still happens. Definately change annually if only doing 1K a year and cost effective to use a semi synth.
Oil in sealed containers does not pick up contaminants, so oil a year old + would be perfectly ok to use.
dbdb - look up the acronym for your user name - explains a lot ;D ;D ;D ;D

dbug sometimes you just spurt it out. Oil contaminated after 1000 miles? OP never mentioned short trips but anyway you don't get many short trips in 1000 miles, not enough to ruin good oil.
But then its easier to scare the punters and make yourself sound big. Sad though. :'(

Dbdb Acronym: don't be a douche bag ;)

Here we go again dbug vs dbdb ::)

May I refer the honourable gentlemen to ....

IMHO This is getting monotonous, boring and TBH.... pathetic.

agreed .. mileage or time whichever comes first!

Just to put my previous comment into perspective....
Last time I bought oil on TC it was 20 litres for £35.97 + VAT = £43.16. For 20 litres .. so that's £2.16 a litre. Omega takes just under 6 litres so that's £12.94 (max)
Last time I bought filters they were £3.12 + VAT = £3.78
So, an WW2 argument over the princely sum of £16.72 and 30 minutes work, most of which is drinking coffee while the sump drains.
What is the point ??
:(

Very little financial outlay and effort for peace of mind imho. :y

Wow, some interesting replies.
There is fully synth in it.
General opinion seems to be better to change it.
Thanks.

Despite what some are saying, it **MUST** be changed. The low miles turn the oil slightly acidic, and it will also trap a lot of moisture. As I'm sure you can imagine, this isn't great for the engine.

convinced..will change. I suppose at 16 it still deserves to be treated as if it was 2.

I have just bought my son a 1998 Astra1.6 for peanuts with a "rattly camshaft" as diagnosed by the garage. The car has 38,000 miles from new and spent its early years in Jersey and then with an old person in Bournemouth.
Oil was black as black and and could have been original for all I know. Anyway quick oil and filter change and hydraulic lifters now nice and quiet even from cold start after a week standing while we where on holiday.

As others have said, I would change it too. That oil would have been either sat for long amounts of time or short trips, going by such low miles. So fresh oil would go down well :y
Besides it costs so little to do an oil change, especially if DIY :y
