i was hoping to get a td5 up to a bout 3K value is there anything to really look out for and avoid etc oh yes and it would have to be an auto unfourtunatley. or do you think its a bad idea for that sort of money, wifey also likes the hyundia santa fee which i have been told is quite sound ???
any advice please thanks

They do indeed rust but not in the same way as the older Disco's,its the rear end of the chassis legs that mainly rot out.The body and boot floors especially seem much better protected,My Disco 2 is a 99 model and the body is totally rot free,I have treated the chassis as best I can and that's ok as well at the moment but I know it will go eventually :'(

Looked at loads until I decided to buy a P38. I really suggest you drive the T5 with the slushbox. It's a bit slow not quite as bad the old 6 cylinder BMW veg burner. Honestly for the MPG difference don't discount a V8 on gas. Decoding Landy's is a pain. Disco 1's need a completely different system. (ECU mate is the cheapest). Disco 2's will let you use a basic OBD reader but if you want to go deeper and look at the other systems like brakes ABS your need a different system again. So you end up looking at Hawkeye or Black box solutions. Once you get your head round that it's a simple enough system. They have problems like every other car maker however parts are cheap. Worth checking the sun roofs don't leak, the family get a cob on when their head gets wet!!!!

Tell me about it,one of my first jobs was headliner out and sunroofs out and re-bonded :-X

Apart from the usual body rot and chassis as has been said before :-
Check Chassis and box sections for rust and accident repairs
Check for Leaking sunroofs
Check for Water getting in above the rear door.
Check Air suspension, Is it sitting level?
Does the air compressor come on at start-up?
Check for leaks at the bottom of the suspension air bags
Check for Smoke, Look for blue oil smoke, black diesel smoke (overfueling), heavy black diesel smoke (failing turbocharger) or white smoke on starting (water in the bores)
check steering (bushes tend to wear out)
Check for Coolant leaks, Td5 water pumps can leak, causing coolant level to drop, then overheating occurs....
Check ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement) pipes for corrosion. Can be seen behind the off-side front wheel (very costly to put right)
Check all warning lights including abs/hdc/tc lights on the dash come on AND EXTINGUISH once started, if not then there's hub sensor problems

better write this lot down..cheers chaps :y

And don't forget the really shit fuel economy,oh hang on,thats just mine being a V8 :-X

They are super crap on Petrol. Only way is LPG and then don't expect more 12-14 MPG (3.9 lump later ones maybe better) My 4.6 P38 Rangy slaughters my 3.9 disco in the MPG stakes. I got 20 MPG coming back from Exmoor on petrol. That was sticking to 70 with some silliness coming out of the roundabouts. For a big car it does get down the road quickly. Luckily I now have the LPG kit up and running so hopefully 17 MPG on gas should be doable.

Mines manual and on petrol and does 16-17 around locally doing school run etc, only does about 100 miles a week so not too bothered really, got the Signum for the longer faster runs :y

I wish my Jeep had something like that......... ::) ::)

I have a Disco II Td5 auto which I was going to sell. That was until the gearbox blew up.
I also have a Disco 1, but the later car is by far the better. My advice is as follows.
Don't by a diesel. Just have done with the extra fuel use of the V8.
Disco 1 rots everywhere. Disco II rots hardly anywhere.
The air suspension and ACE are the key things to have, but they can be unreliable, so be prepared.
-
My disco 2 has had the ace system disabled and uprated anti roll bars fitted as the cost of pipe replacement as well as distribution block was prohibitive. Not in my ownership, I hasten to add, but by the previous farmer owner who put the car into the main dealer (where I work) for all repairs.
Check also for leaking fuel pressure regulator on the td5 (rear drivers side of block) which drips down onto the starter. This subsequently causes starter solenoid probs but is a cheap repair. Look for kits on eBay.
A few horses available to be unleashed by egr bypass, cat removal and centre box removal. Also tweaking turbo boost but that gets costly.
And look for rust. Not as bad body wise as D1 but chassis does rot. As does D1. :-)

not just the chassis either...the floor is a big rust area and as bad as a d1...have 2 friends that both have d2 one as owned his since new 56,000 miles from new,MOT failure due too excessive rot in the floor, and the other needs a new chassis section.....own a lardy become good friends with a welder :y

Or go for some class and Merc engine and gearbox and buy a Jeep, mind, to be honest, only if you don't have to drive on many twisty roads, they do roll a bit...... ::) :( ::)

And we are back to a Disco with ACE fitted, they do handle rather well :y ;D

Possibly, maybe I need to be looking at anti roll bars for the Jeep, looked a the disco (ex series LR owner) but they are more agricultural than the Jeep...... :) :)
-
thanks everyone so basically what we are saying is going to be expensive :'( :'(
I personaly love the old disco never quite liked the new version as much sure they are very good but never got to try one lost all my money before i was able to :'( :'( well i didnt but sure my ex business partners doing very well in newzealand >:( >:( blah blah
so a 4x4 on a budget cheap ish to fix fairly sort of economical must be able to get possibly 2 giraffe type greyhounds in the boot, has to be automatic, and a solid handle to hang on to on the passanger side would be an advantage, Wifey likes the santa fee newlook nice but this would be old still supposed to be quite solid so i have been told
any suggestions or should i stick with looking at a disco

By a P38. Have every luxury known to man and do lots of reading on what goes wrong!!!!! TBH because the P38 and Disco have suffered problems most issues can now be fixed very cheaply. Take the air suspension on my P38 I've just brought. People will tell you how it will go wrong yet the price of the air bags these days is no more than the price of a quality pair of shocks. Once you get your head around how it all works it isn't to bad. I'd stay clear of anything which has had the EAS removed and conventional springs fitted. As for the engines and transmissions it comes down to how well they have been serviced. If you buy a snotter then it will go wrong but that is the same of any make. As for running costs. If you buy any other make I can't see you getting bits cheaper than you can for a Landy.

really ???,mine is the ES model with electric everything, wood and leather

Series 11 TD5 is better than the Series 1 though I find the rear doors are quite narrow for elderly people to get in and out of. Series 111 addresses this but more expensive to buy. Mpg is the same as my Miggy so no change there. Go for it, nice motors and they are built from girders. :y
-
Forget Land Rovers , too many problems much better 4x4s out there ,I have had Nissans, Toyota & now Hyundai no problems with any of them.

and when they break they cost a fek'n shed load to fix
-
Never had one "break" that's the point I was getting over Land Rover still can't get it right after all the years they have been going.
-
Also make sure all the door locks work as my td5 cost me £500 to sort out a week after i bought it. Also the injector harness has a few problems with oil so read up on that. This is a very good website for all the fixes http://www.discovery2.co.uk/

What about a Nissan X-Trail ... 2.2 Dci ... I'm told ... is the one to go for? :-\
-
never really liked the look of those.
Wifey really wants me to get a pick up live the navvara but no good for my work, how on earth she thinks she will park it especially reverse is another matter altogether :o ::)
-
Reversing? That's what towbars are for.
Parking by Braille! ;D
-
thats exactly what wifey says about bumpers :o :o
but ok thats fine providing say you hit the garden wall with said bumper and go oh dear silly me ive hit something, i will apply the brake and stop , mm thats the big pedal on the left :y
or you could off course hit lets say the garden wall and say oh dear silly me i will use the accelerator and this big round steering thingy to drive myself off the wall, now lets see i am going in reverse so that means i turn the wheel this way, oops silly me wrong way, it will be ok in a minute, just a little bit further, m little bit more, nearly there, oh just a tiny bit further, see all finished told you it would work, see silly it is but a scratch and most off its on the bumper. Now i f i had gone forward i might have pulled the bumper off :y :o :o
Oh look I am a dolly doughnut ha ha you cant get out with that wall so close to your door, hold on i will move the car forward. No No its ok dear i will get out your side see i can quite easily slide over the gear stick and handbrake :) :)

Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD Merc engine and auto box, loads of torque and can go pretty well if you want to..... :y :y
-
My mate drove a TD5 Auto to Cape Town! :y
The gearbox kakked itself in Ethiopia and he ended up having to ship one from Blighty which cost him dearly!!! ::)
-
Have you considered a Ford Explorer? I have had 3 of them - A certain Top Gear presenter called it a "hot rod" in his review of 4x4's back in 1999 as it was American and the fastest 4x4 at the time. It also has a huge load area and self levelling suspension and lots of spares available. Petrol is around 22mpg and ideal for Multi point LPG conversion. Was America's best selling 4x4 for years.
Dodgy parts are timing chain guides wear but most will have been done by now and handbrake is rubbish as this was added for the UK market to convert a foot brake set up to handbrake as the yanks didn't think we would like it - but all are auto gearbox's anyway.
