Title: what's this plug for? (by front shock mounting)
Post by: dbdb on 08 May 2013, 14:59:01

Anyone know what this is for? (2.6 V6 Elite). It joins the cable by the front shock mounting.  Looking at the corrosion on the connections it doesn't seem to have been plugged in for a long time.

Looks like power sounder?

Is the coolant level sensor plugged in :-\ looks a bit long to be the power sounder :-\ what colour are the wires? Cross reference them with Mr Haynes and it should tell you :y

yeah I think that looks like coolant level sensor too

Bonnet switch IMO .. Seems the switch is not there  :-\ :-\ :-\

It sits between the coolant tank & the brake fluid reservoir  usually on F/Lifts

Its not the power sounder I removed that,  blanked off the plug and tucked it away. The flexi conduit has a green stripe on it, the two wires are both brown one with a green stripe.  I can't see anywhere it could plug in.

Here is where the mystery cable joins the other cable, the smooth round silver hump is the top of the o/s shock mount.

I can't locate a water level sensor connected to the expansion tank is this it in the middle of this pic?
(http://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/u546/dbdbx/water_zpsf27d1b38.jpg) If so it is connected.

Do you mean the bonnet alarm spring switch, that is on the other side but I will check it is cabled later.

The later 2.6 & 3.2 cars I've seen under the bonnet of, have, for some unknown reason, had a 'spare' bonnet switch plug on the passenger side of the car & the actual alarm bonnet switch on the driver's side.

The header tank float wiring is obvious if you lift the header tank up out of the way (just a spring clip on the wing side of the tank)

Can't see the coolant level plug in that pic. The sensor is directly beneath the cap :y

Right I have lifted the expansion tank and there is a connection under it (well hidden!), all plugged in so it's not that.  Checked the bonnet alarm switch (on passenger side)  that has a connector all plugged in.

I think it must be as Andy B says, spare bonnet alarm wiring.  It does look as it it has never been plugged in to anything.  Odd that VX didn't blank it off though.  However it is on the driver side not the passenger side  on my early facelift 2.6. My bonet alarm switch  is definitely on the passenger (left) side

Either coolant sensor plug (feel underneath expansion tank) or more likely bonnet switch plug.  As said most later facelifts have bonnet switch on drivers side.

Just checked mine . Bonnet alarm is on the drivers side between coolant tank & brake res. no spare connection on passenger side though :-\ :-\ :-\

When GM decided to factory fit bonnet plunger on driver`s side (later F/L) they "lost" the passenger side ;)

thanks for the responses.  I didn't know bonnet alarm switches (the pop up switch) have been moved to the drivers side on later UK spec cars, mine is on the passenger side as was my 2.5.  So I assume VX put the wiring in the drivers side before they moved over to drivers side switches.

Mr Haynes says wires that colour are Oil Level sensor :y

mine has two as I was messing with them on Monday, its definatly the drivers side bonnet switch for the alarm, the wires are the same colours on the pass/drivers side. Stupid having the wiring on both sides and only having one switch  ???

Al I admire your ability to read the Haynes wiring diagrams, they are a PITA to decipher.  It's given me a headache just trying to read the low res scan I have.  However I think I have found mine there, BRGN and BR (BRown with GReen stripe and BRown) going into a switch on track 939, switch icon is marked S120 - "Anti-theft alarm bonnet switch" in the index.  It's for a pre-facelift of course but I imagine they kept it.  Which track did you find the oil level sensor on?  Alternate candidates could be P44 air mass meter, k52relay - blower, M54 coolant pump timing control and probably a few others, I gave up on finding S120, the icon was clearly the bonnet plunger switch:

Without it to hand Current track 840 (or there aboots) in with the MID wiring :y Be sure that you're looking at the later diagrams though ::) although not officially for the face lifts, the only major differences are the engine ecu connections.

The rest of it is accurate enough to work off :y

When you own an Ex Plod car or two, it's about the only way to repair what used to be the dash wiring ;D I'm no electrician so Mr Haynes has actually been a godsend in this regard, even when every other section begins " 1. Remove engine..." ::)

I see that, S95 oil level sensor, track 850.  Slightly thinner wire, 0.5mm CSA. I've only been looking at the later model diagrams.

But anything to make you think that is it rather than the numerous other combos of BR and BRGN in the later diagrams?

I could measure the wire diameter I suppose that would pin it down more. Difficult to tell 0.5 CSA from 0.75 though. Or paperclip the plug, bit risky..

I think I'll assume it is the driver's bonnet alarm, looks  likely.

That's the one :y I mentioned it as I recalled seeing BRGN when retrofitting my MID :y

My car is a bit of a conundrum when it comes to wiring, it has a full Elite body loom, but none of the enhanced sensor wiring for the check control system, and that was from the factory, totally discounting what Thames Valley subsequently did to it ;D

I'm Stripping the entire loom from a 2001 2.6 CD for my project, there are only 2 cables in this area with that type plug - header tank & bonnet switch this is the bonnet switch, header tank doesn't have plastic sheath       Trying to post photo but still can't get the hang of it

Thanks,  for photos you need to host them somewhere else and link to them, this forum like most doesn't host photos.  Many use photo bucket www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com), free and easy to use.  Join it,  upload your photo there,  under 'links to share your photo' click the 'direct' link, this will copy it to your clipboard, then in the OO post just click the 'insert image' button and paste the link.  Easy after you have done your first one.

Working out how to copy the direct link with photobucket was tricky, automatically copying to your PC's clipboard is too clever for its own good. Apart from that it is the best photo storage I have used.

Bloody great, any thing to do with carpentry or building houses or cars i'll give you an answer,       stuck trying to put a picture on the forum, i'll give it a go next time.
Your lucky being stuck with one plug' I've got to put the entire loom & ESU's in a 1969 Fibre Glass car,  Nearly 300 photo's so far & counting
