Have had my car a few months one owner from new serviced and mot'd buy the same dealer all it's life low mileage only done 57,000 immaculate condition one bit of rust on drivers rear door and usual dinks for a 13 yr old car cam cover gasket has started to weap on talking to a member on here about getting the job done the subject of the cam belt came up so emailed the dealer and got comprehensive service history off them but no cambelt change so my dilemma is not a lot of cash do I run it till belt breaks then scrap it or sell it as I can't warrant £350 for a new belt

See if DLK in Stoke still does such work, much cheaper, much better ;)
-
Yep parts from bypartsbuy less than £70, and I can now change one in about 3 hours incl coffee and smoke breaks. Check with one of the mobile mechs on here - you'll get a better job from them than from Vx dealer, and much cheaper :y

It's all 'doable' yourself, if you're that way inclined?
Excellent guides and support on here, and the cambelt DVD is a step by step video of the job.
Just a thought. :)

Re cam cover gaskets. Consensus on here is to use genuine GM gaskets.
Contact andyc on here. He is ass parts manager at Vx dealership and will post gaskets at cheaper price than walking into a dealership.
All the best.

. . . . . well for the people who don't DIY that's par for the course, in fact I think I pay more than that. But the garage I use will take a company cheque or company credit card so my company pays, but the card is used mostly for business, so it's all above board etc.

Rog few years back I paid £350 for a vxl dealer to change the belt on a vectra few months down the line on the motorway the idler bearing went started off noisey and got slowly worse till a mile from my destination it seized so I drove for a mile with the belt running on a seized idler when I got to where I was going put foot on clutch and engine stopped lists of smoke from cam cover so got towed home and went to a local garage to change belt and idler the smoke was from the belt melting on the seized idler but didn't melt all the way though so I was lucky but in the end cost me another £350 so yes I know the importance of changing the belt and I've found. Friendly member on here who got the locking kit and has offered to help so will get a kit in a few weeks and have a go if it passes the mot today that is lol :)

Vauxhall went through a phase where alot of dealers would literally only change the cambelt and not the tensioners :-\ yet we as the buying public can only buy the complete kit ::)
Alot of v6 Vectras suffered that fate :'(

And of course they discounted the total charge on that basis. ::) ::) ::)

I wish lol and the site I was given to look on earlier does the belt on its own but to me it's false economy unless belt has to be taken off for another reason I was lucky with that vectra the belt shredded on side an melted a half moon in it when i stopped the engine but didn't break and the pulley turned blue with the heat but it got me from mold to Rhyl with the bearings screaming its head off and only seized a mile from destination so I was very lucky
-
Well she flew through the mot no probs or advisories so looks like I be keeping her and doing the jobs will also invest in a set of tyre chains ready for next winter as not good in the snow

Belt has always been available on its own - but we know the tensioners fail before the belts
