Has anyone got any advice and the pitfalls of buying an ex police omega..?
The car im thinking of buying is. 2001 y 3.0 v6 mv6 special. Estate. 171k some history from what ive been told..?
700.. Good or bad deal...??
-
If the car is presentable, then worth every penny :y no more or less abused than any other 12 year old car IMHO :y
Check cambelt history, and expect to change front wishbone bushes and heater valve fairly soon and all should be fine :y
-
Trim might be an issue as will the overall condition of the body.
Remember it was a police car....
Ex TV cars were looked after better than the Met car also.
As Ex Taxi Al says, a good price for a nice enough car but do give her a good service including the cam belt and water pump!!!
Good luck! :-y

I would have thought your two vehicles are worth more than the one you are buying,I had a Galant v6 and loved it :y
-
I agree... selling them privately would have left you with a nice wad of notes for your purse.
-
Yep ideally i would sell both privately...the galant is an estate and the dogs n**ts to drive, but mot up this month, and the rear qauter glass got smashed.. >:( and the omega is a saloon..nice car but i have two dogs and four kids... :) the galants up for spares or repair...
-
Sorry, but that's a pants deal :-\
I paid £650 for my latest car, a 165k 3.2 estate. Ex Tvp, a shed load of history and a bootfull of spares. Couple of rust spots, but otherwise tidy enough with a brand new MoT :y
-
I totally agree.. But needs must.. The 2dogs need the extra room so i need the estate...i cant wait for the mitsubishi and the omega to sell cos i need a larger car sooner rather than later... It looks like a nice car in the pictures but it could be a right old shed.... :)

Nope til august... :( but payay is a longway off. And i need an estate...no cash changing hands :y he will put six months tax on... :)

Not much more than the Galant then so why not use that while trying to sell it ???

I like ex plod cars for a few reasons
LSD, worth £230 odd quid 8)
You know for at least half its life it has been maintained un like any other
And depending on what you like trim wise, everything you do is an improvement, you basically have a blank canvas to work with ;)
And people will always stop and ask you about it, especially when the graphics are still etched in :D ( not always a good point) :y
-
Apart from the normal Omega bits to check, things I would check for a ex plod Estate are, check which Force it came from, a normal google on the reg should tell you where it was registered. Any Police print out on service history and what millage it left tne force. Most ARU left the Force with lower millage than Traffic, Check if the LSD works, if fitted most were. Check for Aerial holes rust. Suspention (sleeping police men at speed). Estates if the roof rails have been removed cneck for rust around the pluged holes. Self leveling works and wneel bearing noise.

Since my son managed to smash the rear side glass...ive lost interest :-[ plus i would have to spend more moneyon it for mot.. :o
Lsd ?? Whats this ??

An ex-plod car might very ell have had all its services, but they're generally abused, and some, in service ...... ask any of the plod/ex-plod here.
-
Well im making the 90 mile trip to broadstairs in the morning to find out.. Ive only had my new omega 2.2 auto for a couple of days but cant workout the lack throttle response... :( so im px this and my galant and then its someone elses headache

Also a 2001 car is likely to have been 'out' for 8 years now, so the first 120-140k will have seen it serviced, but who knows what has been done since :-\
Both mine have full plod history, my '54 has full history from then, but the '03 has nothing post plod, but I did buy it from the mechanic responsible for it in service, and it has wanted for nowt :y The plod defect reports and job cards make for sobering reading though: tyres every 5k (sometimes less), TVP spent almost the same amount on body repairs in four years as they paid for the car to begin with ::) services are done every 10k, with cambelts either every 40 or 80k depending on the force that had it.
Remember though, the 8 years since is plenty of time for abuse and neglect to kick in...

if the light is on it must be storing something, try the paper clip test here http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90581.0 and post up the results :y

Did you scan it ? or were you there when it was scanned & did you see the results?
Or have you just been told no codes were showing/
As unusual for the light to be on with nothing stored. :-\
As said in another reply . . .do the paperclip test & post up the results.

as regards code readers showing no codes-pants. Mate of mine bought a code reader and I undid MAF -to test his reader= EML was on - yet reader said no codes??
Paperclip straight away-73/74 iirc
Anyway point is----do paperclip test :y :y

will do.. if the rain ever stops. >:(
I had the bonnet up earlier with the engine running.. and I could here a hissing sound coming from the very top of the engine..(theres four small pipes running into the top of the engine) one of these pipes was split, so repaired this the leak has stopped, could this have caused the EML to be on.. ???. if I disconnect the battery would this reset the system ???

NO!
Its a common misconception that disconnecting the battery will reset the ECU, but this is not the case on the Bosch Motronic ECUs, as the details are all in NVRAM.
In most cases on this ECU, to get the EML to go out, you simply need to fix the fault.

i agree looked after like no other just bought a 00 3.0v6 manual with lsd air suspension and had just got new genuine front arms discs and pads front and rear complete exhaust from cat back and couple of tires body is rust free apart from small spot under rear wiper, bought for 312 with tax run out and mot finishing, already have had it sorted and is MOT for a year, never heard a quieter running 3.0 even with 150k on it, now to find a new owner cheers eric
forgot to mention its an estate

I used to buy all my Senators and Omegas at the Witney auctions, and they all came with service history. My last Witney purchase, in 2006, OE03EWW, had done 122000 miles, and in that time had got through four clutches. Ex police cars are well maintained, but they are driven hard with little regard to wear.
I was first attracted to Senators by an item on Top Gear where Quentin Wilson interviewed a police workshop mechanic.who said "we change the brake pads every fortnight and the tyres once a month. Nothing else goes wrong on these cars".
