An I6 in a Chevette? Are you mad? Just getting it in the car would mean cutting a damn great hole, and then it would handle appallingly.
now a 20XE would make for a fun car and isn't too hard to do.

Although thinking back a few years, Hot rod magazine threw a drag car together using a US spec Chevette and a 500ci Cadillac engine that was pretty scary!

Correct. Its the one in my avatar. :y
Wouldnt drop an S6 in a chevette.Get an old slant 4 engine from somewhere and rebuild/tune it for not much money and you would have a very quick little car. ;)
The one in the link is a saloon though. The hatchback shell is the one to have. ;)

The old Viva engine fitted to the standard Chevettes was severely asthmatic. It was gutless even by 1970,s standards. :y

Standard ShoveIt was a heap of cack. Gutless, couldn't stop, didn't like corners, and invariably disintegrated like all Vauxhalls from the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Wasn't particularly comfortable, or reliable.

You'd have to be a real enthusiast to tolerate one today.

My daughters first car, chose it herself, also did most of her own maintenance. Not bad for an 18yr old.
Didn,t have to worry too much, it was totally gutless ;D

Viva and Magnum same body but Magnum jazzed up with bigger engines(1.8&2.3) and better interior with multi dial dash and vinyl roof and rostyle type wheels and quad headlamps, smart in its day :y :y

I had an estate. The body had so little rigidity that I could hear the body flex as I turned in to my parking space and one wheel went up the ramp first. Park with one wheel on a kerb and the tailgate wouldn't close. ::)

Apart from the word Comfortable, you could attribute all those 'features' to an Omega.  ;D

Indeed. One of my mates at school had a 1.3 Chevette. Given the number of "moments" he had in that, they must have been a total liability with more power. :o

Fun on a wet roundabout, though. ;D

The extra 100 or so bhp that mine had was great fun on dry roads. Bilstien shocks, stiffer springs and bushes, wider tyres helped matters a lot.
In the wet however,it was scary as fack.I had a race (in the wet) with a 2.2 Princess one night and hardly seen which way he went. :-[
The driver (owner of our local village garage) was a pretty talented bloke though. Ex British formula Ford champion and Lotus F3 driver, who showed me his race results where he regularily beat Jody Sheckter,Alan Jones and many other drivers who became well known a few years later.
That eased my acute embarrasment a bit. ;D

Was given a brand new one as a company car moons ago, had to drive to Leeds to pick it up and hand my Escort back, on the way back down the M1 needed petrol, so stopped for about 45 mins trying to work out where the bloody petrol filler cap was.  :-[

Was the Chevette a scaled down Cavalier? Or are they basically the same car :-\

The red saloon in the original link looks just like a Mk1 Cavalier...

Was occasionally taken to school in one in the early eighties, I can still smell the damp and petrol fume mix ;D It was poo brown as well, as if that was it's biggest issue ;D

There was a strong family resemblance (particularily with the saloon) but I dont think thy had any parts in common at all, apart from possibly minor trim pieces like door handles. :y

Oh I don't know, the Omega is pretty rapid and capable in corners and on the brakes for the class of car it is. And is pretty reliable - far more than the Shitvette could ever aspire to.

Corrosion. Yes, well, err, it is a Vauxhall!

The Cavalier was significantly larger.

It was launched with the 1256 pushrod engine from the Viva/Chevette as an option if you didn't want the 1.6 cam in head engine. I don't know if anyone actually bought one :-\
