Also check to see if the pupils are dilated. If so your car is triiiiiippppin! ;D ;D

WITH A DRIVESHAFT REMOVED, look into the output hole where the driveshaft pops in, if there is one cross-shaft keeping the planet wheels apart, then its an open diff. If there's a pair of crossed shafts visible, then its LSD.

if your car is stuck in a lift and thinks the lift is on fire that's a sure sign ;D ;D ;D

Fair chance if it was Ex Police, near zero chance if not, Most Ex Plods had Calibrated Speedo sticker on the Clock.
Sometimes difficult to tell when just driving the car if its not fitted, bloody obvious though when LSD is fitted and licks in. ;)

Not ex-police, but "modified" by a previous owner, so is a possibility

Easiest way to tell for sure without climbing under the car is one wheel on grass or gravel the other on tarmac, TC off, loud pedal from stationary. Non LSD will just spin the wheel on the grass, LSD fitted, your be off like a shot leaving tell tale marks behind you whilst trying to control your car in a straight line and probably start wondering why you took this test in the first place. :y

That would work.
If my car did :'(
I'm at the point of stripping her for spares, and wondering if it was worth keeping/selling the diff.
