Looking at the UPS stats for my brother's 2 shops in Witney, it is a common occurance in West Oxfordshire's biggest town....

Well, we get power cuts here all the time, but seeing as we've only recently gotten running water then it's maybe no surprise.

However, I've recently been working on a call centre solution for Scottish Power, (Oh the stories I could tell you!!). Anyway, they have a big office in the south side of Glasgow, which houses one of their datacentres. (The main one BTW!). Over the past year, they've had about eight power outages to the datacentres alone. (Two of which were caused because someone forgot to fill the backup generators with diesel!!!  ::) )

It wouldn't be so bad but they refuse to allow us to install UPS's because they insist their power is so reliable!!

Everytime it happens, it destroys the ginagorous clustered storage arrays we have housed there!!

I'm really not looking forward to supporting it!!  :-?

I remember the power cuts...we had to look in the paper to see when were going to be allowed lights and heating. Also remember the tanker drivers strike (in 78?) got word that Watford Gap had some fuel so collected all the cans we could find and sneaked in through the back road into the services and got around 25 Gals into a Marina  ;D, shared it out with my mates, it was the first fuel we'd had for weeks.

Get used to power cuts, if we , as a country, dont build some more coal stations AND start a new nuclear programme soon then we will have cuts or face collapse of the grid. Green alternatives may contribute a bit but we have been closing older power stations over the last 20 years without building any new ones except for smalll gas powered ones...and guess what? the gas is running out.

My dad had a Viva - JEO 61H still remember the reg after 25 years.

It was red with a black pvc interior that would fry your legs on hot summer days - kids didn't wear sealbelts and the ICE was a radio with MW and LW.

Happy days  ::)

Given the choice, at the time it'd've had to have been the Capri.

Now, I'm not so sure, it would depend on what mood I was in, but I have to admit to having wanted to be Lewis Colins when I grew up!!

My dad had a Hillman Minx (hunter shape) which some on here will have seen me mention before.  I too remember the reg OHX 957 E.  It was blue and had a blue PVC interior.  Our legs fried on hot days and frooze on cold ones.  I well remember the MW and LW radio that used to fade in and out.

That car was replaced by another Hunter, this time the Chrysler version (a poor alternative to the Rootes product), reg DLF 517 T.  I still remember crying when the blue Minx went!!

After that, dad got a nearly new MK2 Cavalier, C 319 SLO.  This was red and he had loads of trouble with the Camshaft.  Mum and Dad then joined the VW camp, and I was then old enough to drive.

The hillman minx was a great car and I still to this day wonder what became of it...........

I remember the power cuts too!

My dad had a clapped out Mk4 Ford Zephyr 2.5 (bought ofr towing a boat).

He also had a bike, sold the boat dumped the car, kept with bikes, at 17 I got a Suzuki GP100 (the disc braked sport one) didn't get a car licence until nearly 21.

Before I passed my car test I had burnt off XR3s, cruised on motorways (boring), done very long trips at 80mpg and 80mph (at same time).

At the time my dad worked for a Peugeot dealer who became a PT dealer, and I got a KKV444V sticker :y

That put my future car purchase in line! Also 1970s cars I like are 504, Avenger & Sunbeam

We lived abroad in the 70's so stuff lile the power cuts was something we only heard about when we got back to the UK....thankfully

As for some of the other stuff....

Grifter or Chopper, i had both (not at the same time) the Grifter ended up being converted into a BMX
XJS or Capri, neither i wanted the RS2000 Xpack that Doyle drove....hubba hubba.

Flares, drainpipes, tanktops and parker jackets were all the rage

Wallpaper always seemed to be some lurid shade of biege, green or yellow, or worse all three. And it all seemed to have some pretty strange patterns

TV for me was cool, Grange hill, magic roundabout, Dangermouse (although that could have been the 80's) captain pugwash, bagpuss.....
