Still no campaign medal for Bomber Command, yet Prince Harry is given a gong for a few weeks in Afghanistan., doesn't seem right does it? >:(
-
Yes and 53 of 617 squadron did not return on this mission which caused much damage in the Ruhr Valley in 1943, and more importantly boosted the morale of the British population.
We must never forget their sacrifice. :y :y

Whilst I have massive sympathy for the members of Bomber Command .. who lost 55,500 crew during the war (and that is NOT a typo), the "Aircrew Medal" is/was intended to treat ALL lost/missing aircrew equally. singling out Bomber Command would tend to diminish the efforts of many other, smaller units who also lost crews.
IMHO every single person who gave their lives in any field deserve our thanks.. they are the only reason we are free to speak English not German

I am confused here....didn't Fighter Command pilots receive campaign medals?
:-/
....and anyway the USA Bomber Group, who lost 80,000+ over Europe flying from the UK did receive campaign medals, and most of our other forces did as well (apart from the merchant navy crews >:( >:()

I live just a few miles North of RAF Scampton, and to see the place now is very sad. Only the Red Arrows there now, but for how much longer? Even the Lancaster gate guardian went, a few years back, similarly, the Vulcans left around the time of the Falklands war.
With MOD cutbacks the place has no future at all, sadly.

I'm pretty sure Fighter Command received campaign medals, but for reasons of "political correctness" Bomber Command didn't.
Mustn't upset the Germans.

No, but long range ballistic missiles have taken over this role.

This was the start of (mistaken) political correctness! Bloody cheek is it not; an insult to the men who risked their lives to give us the freedom to be 'pc'! >:( >:( >:(

Long range ballistic missiles of the type we have are only armed with nuclear warheads (Trident & Polaris/chevaline before that) which can only be launched with the express permission of the USA. If we wanted to deliver conventional explosives, all we are left with are the dear old Tornados, plus a few Tomahawk (cruise) missiles, which are only medium(ish) range.

I am very fortuneate in not living too far away.
When I am able I have often taken the camera and gone for a cruise round the open country side arround there.
I just follow my nose, one moring I and up on a road no wider than the car, there were odd patches of low lying mist, with rabbits running down the road side, a stoat ran accross the road, I saw an owl turn it's head the full 360 (seen owl's before but never saw one do that in real life. Partridges and Pheasant's running lose, it was truly amazing. On the journey back the sun's ray's were streaming through the tree's etc. Wonderfull trips out.
But yet I never ever gave the Dambusters any thought whilst I was driving round, and yet as a kid I reckon it was one of the best films ever as I grew up.
How sad am I for not realisng
