Title: Bose speaker/tweeter noise
Post by: Mr.OmegaMan on 03 June 2013, 21:18:30
Hi all,

I've noticed a static type noise coming from what i believe are called the tweeters on the front doors not the bottom main ones, Is this normal on the Elite/Bose set-up, As I've noticed the GLS ones are silent. But saying that the Ones on the elite are barely noticeable when the volume is up not too loud just average, That static in the video is with the volume on one click roughly.

Picture of the speaker/tweeter in question but both front ones seem to do it...
(http://i1158.photobucket.com/albums/p620/Agemo_Legend/983765_534708739920264_1899524692_n_zps4f9ab9f3.jpg) (http://s1158.photobucket.com/user/Agemo_Legend/media/983765_534708739920264_1899524692_n_zps4f9ab9f3.jpg.html)

Video of the sound..

Don't know if you can hear it the same in the video, doesn't look like it just had a watch  :-\

Thanks in advance...

 :)

Ok a quick update, Pulled the one off the Elite but then checked the GLS it doesn't have one on the drivers side but the passenger side does and it is quiet, Are they supposed to make a little static type sound ? and what's the point of them i could just disconnect them but I'm sure they are there for a reason  :-\

The Tweeters are are part of the Speaker set up to provide the high notes (Treble).

On the GLS the tweeters are hooked to the HU Amps channels using a Passive Cross Over, in the Elites (Bose) there connected to the Active Amps Channel outputs, so they do the same job just in a different set up configuration.

Is the noise definitely coming from the tweeters?, the tweeters wont generate any static noise on there own more likely to be the Amp, or faulty capacitor in the crossover. Check there is sound coming from the tweeter itself as it could be a input issue to the Amp and the Amp is generating or compressing the noise with no input.

I'm sure it's coming from the tweeter area put my ear against it while its in place got 2 replacements coming cheap enough to rule them out or not. Is the amp/capacitor those things behing the tweeter ?

Amp in Boot, Crossover (Capacitor and Coil) should be part of the Tweeter behind it in the same plastic housing.

Replaced the tweeters and they still make a noise that must be how they are then  :-\ checked the boot, rear seats etc no noise but just from the 2 front tweeters not loud just there.

Noticed from another thread of yours that you've had the HU out recently (connections remade properly?), can you confirm that all 8 speakers are working as they should be.

Sorry I can't make out what HU stands for  :-[ but I've put my hand over them all even parcel shelf and ear over door ones they all seem to be working fine just the 2 front tweeters that's the problem but nothing I can't live with.

Nope didn't have to take the radio unit out after all, I could be getting paranoid with hearing things its not noticeable when the volume is up that much.

Probably time to have a meet up with another Elite owner and do some listening comparisons.

So just to confirm, all speakers are working, both tweeters are giving out treble?, and this noise is coming from both tweeters with the Vol turned down?

More of a light static sound.. I did make a video although it isn't much good. Tweeter Sound Video Link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxhZPyagg8A&feature=em-upload_owner)

Yep I'm 99% sure all speakers are working sitting in the rear its a lovely clear sound and its good in the front just that if the volume is low i can just about hear this sound, If the Volume if off altogether tweeters don't make a sound either. Nothing i can't live with just thought i'd ask encase it was normal or a simple common problem.

Trick question ? .. Locked the car gone indoors "House" cant hear anything... But as you'll be familiar with the steering wheel audio controls do stay illuminated for 5 minuets or so.

Hmm, ok thinking out loud now, Im starting to wonder whether someone has fitted a Non Bose configured HU into the Bose Set Up in its previous life!

When you use or increase the Volume Control does it become loud very quickly, what does the quality sound like at say 1/2 volume and full volume, with a decent CD at full volume there should no or very little distortion?.

Hmmm aye anything is possible  :-\ ... I do know its history pretty much from new,
Originally it was owned by a chauffeurs company from new then Elite Pete had it around 2007 with arround 178,000 on the clock then sold it to the chap i got it from who didn't use it much by looks of it only did around 9,000miles in 6 years who didn't seem the type to play about with cars just use them and get garages to maintain the car. Now its at around 188,000 in my possession.

Back to the radio, The sound quality is Much better than the system on the GLS, One good thing is this "tweeter" sound doesn't get louder when the volume goes up so i can easily drown out the noise, Its only noticeable when stationary or low speeds on low volume..

Wasn't really asking what the Bose sound quality was like compared to a GLS, I was trying to ascertain something specific about the output levels of your HU and thinking the answer to the questions about Volume levels may help.

Again, 'When you use or increase the Volume Control does it become loud very quickly, what does the quality sound like at say 1/2 volume and full volume, also, in terms of distortion at any of these stages'

There's nothing wrong at all with the speakers quality of audio at any level just when its low these front tweeters make this noise I've tried to describe. I would pull the radio out to check the wires take a few pictures etc. but its a pig of a job by looks of it.

Zirk can't you hear anything in the video ?  :-\ if not that must be good as one would have thought the video would have picked up the sound a little at least.

Some pictures of the radio, speakers, etc. seem to be Elite standard not retro fitted.

The only other way the video method may work is if I take a 2 part video with and without the tweeters at the same volume.

What I don't understand is all the Bose speakers are working fine it's just these GM tweeters  :-\

I did try this "tweeter test video" though a FM transmitter and it played the tones very clear the "tweeters" but still could hear the sound the tweeters make.

As long as there's no major problem like its going to blow up or go on fire etc i can live with the sound. I'll try putting the tweeters in the GLS see if they make this sound in there with the elite tweeters.

Not sure if this has anything to do with the tweeter static type sound but sometimes not always the radio speakers or tweeter pops once not sure where from when i start the car, Even though the radio is off it comes on when the engine has been fired up most likely because i leave it on but volume off so i can see trip computer i don't turn it off as it turns it's self off when the key it out if that makes sense.

Yes 100% Sure of that.

Check there is sound coming from the tweeter itself
Yep they do work all of them.

as it could be a input issue to the Amp and the Amp is generating or compressing the noise with no input.
Looks like it could be this or the Head Unit. and going by old threads could be the Bose AMP in the boot.

(sorry i didn't really know what you where on about originally my fault  :-[)

So now i know its possibly the AMP would a replacement just be a straight swap it wouldn't need coding to the car like the HU's ?

This is the part i needed then..

Just to clarify it did this tweeter noise before I started using the FM transmitter. and that was the only way to test that video on the tweeters. ;)

Radio speakers popped again today cant be sure if the pop came from the lover speaker or the tweeter mind  :-\

Had a look on eBay for an AMP unit but didn't buy one there seems to be different part numbers on them will have to check what part number is on mine. But just encase it has had a change in the past what part number should my car have ?

And would i need to disconnect the battery to remove the amp unit from the boot.

Thanks  :)

Thanks  :)
