Hi, As a newbie to this forum and a prospective buyer of an Omega, could I ask the advice of more knowledgeable members.
My old Mercedes tow car has finally given up the ghost and I am looking for an Omega to take its place. I am however a bit overwhelmed by the choice.
I shall be towing a medium sized caravan so need something with a bit of grunt, but what?
I would appreciate your advice as there are a number on ebay at the moment.
I suppose what is just as important is what to stay clear of.
Tom
If any member has anything with a tow bar in the 6oo pound range then let me know.

If you are towing a pikey wagon I would go with a 3lt or 3.2lt v6 or a chipped manual 2.5TD,I found my 2.5 v6 Auto lacked torque when towing, possibly manual 2.5 v6 would fare better :y

yes henryd :y

Manual 2.5 will do the job :y
If you want a auto, 3lt or 3.2 will be better.
The ar35 auto box that is fitted to the above is stronger.
Might be better to lpg the bigger engines if you have a auto box because they like a drink ;)

3.0 or the (far superior imo) 3.2. If your towing. Over 200hp with these.
The2.5 TD has a ar25 box which struggles to cope with the torque of the engine. Towing will worsen that I would think. Easily fixed by fitting an ar35 box and then you can chip it. But you may not want that agro.
Defo want a v6 IMO.

I have a 2003 2.6 V6 auto and it towed my old 24ft twin wheel caravan no problem

Thankyou all for all the advice. I was gong to ask about the 2.6.
I have just changed my van from a twin axle 25ft to a 17ft single axle so the weight problem is not such an issue as before.
What are your thoughts on the 2.2?. there are plenty of nice examples around. I am following one on ebay at the moment.?
Tom.

A 2.2 will tow a caravan, but it won't enjoy it, and neither will you!
if nothing else, you'll have your foot to the floor most of the time, just to keep up with any flow of traffic - this will mean you'll get about 8mpg.
Get a 2.5/2.6, or better still a 3.0/3.2 - the extra power will mean that you'll get 15-20mpg *at least*.
Even without the caravan, and assuming you don't "drive like a tool", the economy won't be much different. (mid to high 20s) - plus, (on suitable private land, of course 8) ) you'll have the option to "drive like a tool"
I also, personally, believe that the 2.2 engine is not as reliable as the v6
