So GCHQ could be spying on British citizens, and others, using an american computer programme to "watch" Google and all other search engines in addition to social web sights.
Why the surprise? Spying on everyone, and not just Russians, has been so for ages, since at least WW2, in Defence of the Realm, and to protect us all from attack from our enemies, who we know only too well now can be from within.
So there are many MP's now coming out to say it is wrong and acting as they knew nothing about it! What nonsense, only the very highest in our intelligence agencies who can be trusted, with so much being discussed with the Prime Minister and probably a limited circle of the Cabinet, would be kept informed of what is being acted out. How many MP's can be trusted with such sensitive intelligence if they were kept in the loop? Once more, for decades only a very few "elite" politicians have been kept informed as few can be trusted with the highest level of state secrets.
It all makes me laugh, and cringe at the same time. Are people that gullible to belive in our democracy everyone should know it all? That would be a recipe for disaster!! ::) ::)

You'll be surprised at what people have been programmed to accept, and those that don't get fined £80 every time they speak up ;)

A budding "spy" eh Lizzie, with friends in high places :o

Why should we be surprised? No one has ever satisfactorily explained Guantanamo Bay to me.

any govt applying dictatorship measures (less or more) should watch some of our channels ..

Knowledge is power
As Churchill said during WW2 when it came to deceiving our enemies with our intentions: The truth is far too precious for us not to use every method at our disposal to deceive them of our intentions.
Likewise, knowing what the enemy is going to do is one big advantage, hence Bletchley Park. This save countless lives and shortened the war.
Lizzie 007 I'm shocked. :o :o :o You mean the GCHQ spy centre is used to spy on people, whatever next. :o :o :o
If it helps to make us safer from our enemies abroad and within then it is a necessary part of keeping our democracy. As a terrorist said: We only have to be lucky once. Hence 9/11 and 7/7, not to mention the IRA bomb outrages. :(

I recently got a new smartphone and when I tried to download an 'app' I was told I had to register with Google and they reserved the right collect information as to my usage and location, which would be collected anonymously! ::)
"Yeah right!" I thought and I still havn't registered or downloaded the 'app' as I feel a little uneasy about it! :-\ I know I'm being daft, because at the end of the day I don't really care if some geek in Cheltenham knows I'm looking at porn in Dorset!! ;D

As Rods says :y
The powers that be have been monitoring everyday communications since day one from places like Cheltenham and Menworth Hill.
No matter what you use, if it is electronic then it can be intercepted simples.

You won't be able to use the play store until you open a Google account. Almost every app on your phone can read your contacts, switch your phone off/on, mess with your setting etc.
Your credit/debit card tells us where you shop and what you buy. CCTV is watching you in town.
Live with it or become a paranoid hermit.

ALL permissions are enabled by default at the development stage of an app, and most programmers are too lazy to deselect the permissions the app won't actually use.
However if you want total control over what permissions are granted to a particular app, root your handset and install LBE Privacy Guard (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lbe.security.lite&hl=en)

On my way to Newent last year, my phone beeped and a message said "Welcome to Gloucester, come and visit our shopping centre". :-\ As I had previously told SWMBO that there were no shops for miles around, I was not pleased about that message. ;D ;D

Absolutely right Rods2, and exactly why no one of any intelligence should be shocked about GCHQ gaining information in any form they can, by any means, in Defence of the Realm.
The process actually started at the time of the French Revolution in 1789, when the British Government under William Pitt the younger paid agents of the Realm to inform on any revolutionary elements in this country. Historians are aware, with some evidence to support it, that those agents also mounted a campaign to discredit certain elements of The French Revolution in France, and "influence" events. Thereafter, "revolutionary" movements, such as the Chartists, were monitored by agents of the Realm.
Therefore GCHQ is doing what Bletchley Park did before, as you rightly say Rods2, and also during the previous 200 years with great success It is just the technology has changed.
May their receipe never change and every power to their elbow to ensure we can all sleep safely at night :y :y :y :y

I cannot comment on that dbug, as I have signed the Official Secrets Act! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;) ;)
Seriously, nor could William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, comment much on the Marr show this morning for exactly the same reasons. As said before, what our elite politicians know is much greater than they can ever comment on, nor in fact do they actually know all that MI5 and MI6 get up to as politicians can never be trusted, and are a very fluid element in the organisation overall, lasting maybe only 5 years in power. :y :y

As I already know the government monitors my internet use, here's one for the GCHQ weekend team.......Guess who's knobbing your wife this afternoon while your in work?

Who needs to spy, the muppets put all their info on Facebook, Twitter etc.
They can spy on me all they like so long as in the process they cop a few radical muslims who cares :y
As previously stated it has been going on for years.
A funny story:- The company I worked for replied to a government tender through their central purchasing department for computer equipment, and I'm talking Mainframes and Peripherals not the toys and novelties sad on your desk ::) So we won the tender and were told the site for the instal was in Norwich, now in those days we needed air con, three phase power supplies, floor void ETC ETC. The upshot was we needed to use the hardware engineers to inspect the site, provide on going support, and us software consultants to provide support for the actual instal ETC ETC. Now we provided 24*7 cover with a maximum 2 hour response time and needed to have hardware and software engineers in place. We then had to provide the government with a list of personnel that would attend the site, which we duly did. A week later I went in my local pub to be told by the landlord that people had been in asking about my drinking habits, friends and associates, political views et al, strange thought I until they told us to go ahead and instal the kit and put logistics in place for Cheltenham.
I'd only been PV'ed to enter the GCHQ!! :D ;D ;D ;D

Not surprised by that, and I suspect they delved into your background Cleggy to a greater degree than that. To enter such an establishment as even (or especially) as a contractor calls for maximum vetting. I would not be surprised either that they continued to monitor you and all involved in the contract for a considerable time up to the time you would have completed the work, and beyond to see what information you guys may be passing on.
Was this work during the Cold War Cleggy?

As a separate observation, and away from GCHQ, I know my father when a Chief Yeoman of Signals in the Royal Navy came "under observation" when he started the habit of walking into the HM Dockyard where his ship was.................with a copy of The Morning Star under his arm!! :o :o :o
My Dad was, and still is a raving Socialist (that is where I get some of my socialist principles from), but his close colleagues and friends at the time, on board ship, had to point out to him how his actions were stirring interest from a certain quarter! He was persuaded eventually to review his policy of carrying that paper under his arm.........................and instead carried The Daily Telegraph to his ships in future! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Then again it was in the mid '80's to early '90's when technology bans were in place to the soviet block. You could supply them with second user kit but nothing new :y

Smuggling has always been and still is a highly profitable business. If you want to make criminals rich, just ban something or tax it extortionately. :o :o :o :o
This is why sanctions are never 100% successful and rarely change the path the country's leaders have set it on. :(
