Hi all...
As sad as this sounds, my computer is running about 15 hours a day when I am at home. I have not got it on any power down settings. The spec is....
750watt PSU, AMD dual core 6000, I gb Graphics card, 8 gb ram, 22"widescreen monitor, and a 19" tft monitor. :y
From these figures, can anyone give a rough idea what its costing me to run it. Just got normal tariff electricity. Just rough idea would be ok, just to placate swmbo :(
Also got BT 3 Hub, and a 3 in one printer (Hub is on 24/7 )
-
I would guess about 50p a day
-
If it was running flat out then it would be hitting close to 1kWh which is about 13p (very plan dependent)
Based on that £1.95p per day.
Reality is that it wont be running anywhere near that max power so about a third to a half so 65p to 97p per day

yep.. an average pc consumes max 50 watts per hour which makes 1.2 kwh so correct figures...
-
yep.. a modern PC will be around 50 watts when not being thrashed IME. Plus whatever the monitor, printer and other peripherals take.. Then again, AMD CPUs always were a bit sweaty and the above is based on my experience of intel I5/I7.. Not sure what the recent ones are like. Maybe say 100 watts?

I can recommend one of these, if you really want to know (wait for it to be on special offer and you'll get it for a tenner, too.

My breakdown was as follows:
19" monitor - 35 watts
22" monitor - 45 watts
High end PC - 150 watts
router / modem - 20 watts
This is: ((35 + 45 + 150) * 15) + (20 * 24) = 3930 * 0.13 = 51p

Rods, that baby enters the server zone with multiple cpus and disks ;D
besides dual monitor is for jobs generally not generally used at homes..
-
I have two monitors, cem, because I do Flight Sim, and its easier to drag stuff onto the second screen, instead of opening other windows to view. :y
Does also come in handy for comparing files or browsing one file and working on another :y
Thanks for those figures and links

Given that its an AMD with a pouncy GPU, I'd say 150W is too conservative. The memory will hit it as well.
I'd also say you will be losing a fair amount (10s of watts) in that PSU.
On the upside, Homehub3 is quite frugal (if nothing plugged in to gigabit port (why would you)), and pulls 0.46A at 12v, with wifi on. Though its still a shit router ;D
450W for office type use, add 100-150W if caning it.
Whats yer leccy bill, Terbs?

Even small (AMD - for direct comparison) blades with a pair of SAS disks pull 404W at near idle (or the one I'm looking at right now is). And thats a blade, not server, so fans and PSUs are on top.
Dual monitors is for home use. Not that common in workplaces here.

Last bill was £197 per quarter....bear in mind I do not spend a lot of time here.... Gas central heating, Gas cooker, tv, washing machine, worktop dishwasher.....and heavily used computer :y
Computer has got two 500gb disks and three others, 160, and two 80's internally. Mistake...there is also a second at 160gb in there too :y
-
I dread to think what my network equipment is pulling..... ::)
In fact I dread to think what my network lab pulls when it's powered up as well. :o

If you can consolidate the disks with fewer decent sized ones... ;)

I've turned all gay and enabled some power saving features of the switch that is on all the time :-[
If you have a Cisco 12000, can I come round in the winter for warmth?

I can recommend one of these, if you really want to know (wait for it to be on special offer and you'll get it for a tenner, too.

I've got something similar......I was quite surprised when i check my old celerion pc to my newish I5.
Old Pc was using 150w just sitting there doing nothing.....newish I5 takes 60w doing nothing (This doesnt include monitor)

My i5 based MCE is about 60W playing a DVD, according to the (probably wildly inaccurate) eon gadget

I've had 3 hd's in the old celery one, 2 of them (2x1TB in raid1) got moved over to the i5, so 3 in the i5 as well. That will increase the watts a bit.......however i have noticed if the 2 x 1TB's are not accessed for a period of time, they spin down...not checked the power consumption when that happens....

Likely to be newer than the junk Terbs has rammed in his, so very possibly less than 10W each

looking at the above figures , no one seems to be using SSD disks! ;D

Nope, however I noticed a 6509 in the corner of a site I visited the other day which looked like it needed a new home and just for a minute I considered it..... Then I thought a) I haven't got enough twin and earth cable to reach the nearest lamppost to the house and b) I really would Like Mrs VXL to cook my tea for me. ;D

Only in my laptops and netbook.
There is one in the server here as well.

Dump anything smaller than 1Tb, and consolidate on to fewer, more energy efficient, larger, faster drives.

If you'd like to send me 40TB of SSD drives, I'd be more than happy to switch to them ;D
-
:o With a collection of disks old enough to be that small, on 15 hours a day, probably a couple of spinups a day, I'd get rid of them before they go pop and dump all your data. Chuck everything on a single green drive of a couple of TB and you'll save a good few watts too.

Put the OS on a SSD though, 60GB is plenty.
Yes turn the speed down in summer 8) but in winter just think of it all as an extra heater :-[

Yes I agree, get rid of all those old small SATA drives (I will pay the postage to Spain). You deserve modern stuff. ;D ;D

40 TB.. ??? what are you keeping ? lots of films and mp3 probably..

I'm assuming Cem was talking about SSDs using less power than spinning platters though, in which case there'd be no point just augmenting things with an SSD ;)
In any case, the boxes containing 40TB of drives in my case are NASs so the OS goes wherever QNAP decided to put it.. ;D
