Hi Everyone.
I've been offered a contract working for C&S Motor Group in London. The job is as a self employed recovery driver. They provide you with a recovery truck, sat nav etc.
Apparently some of the work involves recovering cars for the Met (after accidents etc.)
I'm worried that I won't pass the vetting procedure as I got a caution 3 and a half years ago. I was in a violent and abusive relationship and defended myself and got in trouble for it even though I was in hospital for 2 weeks.
Is there any point in me going through the training and vetting procedure?
Will the Met reject me for this?
When I applied for the job they said nothing about needing to pass a CRB check or anything like that.
Are cautions ever spent?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm really worried about this.
-
If you've had a caution then surely the crime has been dealt with and sentence is classed as "spent" meaning you should have no problem. I'd go for it after all they can only say no.
-
I would have thought as your contract is with C & S, I would not have thought the Met would even get involved.
My son in law worked as a recovery driver for Ontime, before he was promoted. I can't recall him saying anything about vetting. They had the Police contract.
I will give him a bell now and see what he says. :y
-
Fairly sure C&S are a stand alone Recovery firm, nothing to do with the Met, they are probably on the Mets Approved Recovery List along with many others, cant see that needing to go through any of the Mets Vetting procedures.
I actually know a Driver from C&S Motors, I'll bear Him in mind if you need more info.
-
Right....I have just phoned Ontime, and spoke to the boss at Studley Green base, and you will be vetted. All Ontime drivers were vetted. It depends on your 'indiscretion' whether the police allow it, or how long since the 'indiscretion'. All their drivers are held on file. He says be honest with them. Its the company that employs you that has to declare the drivers.
Hope this helps. :y
-
Many thanks for your help.
I'll just tell them and hope for the best. I would really like to do this so I hope I don't get rejected.

as per the previous post re vetting. But there is a different angle. they might say you are self employed to get around employee rights ( paid holidays, maternity pay, pensions etc). don't create a fuss unless you have to but just be aware of what terms they think they can impose and what they can really get away with. ( for example if you are self employed then they pay you gross, you have to pay your own tax and NI)

Yes I realise being self employed is not ideal but it would be a way into the industry for me. They provide you with your own recovery truck so there is no need to commute which is a big bonus around here.

I am surprised that an "enhanced vetting procedure" is required for a truck driver undertaking work for the police. Basic vetting maybe, but enhanced covers those working directly with the police and their services who enter police property and can come into contact with confidential and privileged information. ;)

I may be talking out of the top of my head, but I always thought a caution, was, 'a smack on the wrist, don't do it again' type of punishment.
You will probably be ok.
-
for example if you are self employed then they pay you gross, you have to pay your own tax and NI
Depends whether you qualify for gross payment
-
The chap I spoke to at Ontime did not mention the word 'enhanced', just the fact that all the Ontime drivers were vetted. They had a Thames Valley Police contract, not sure about a Met contract. Would not know if the vetting procedure is any different.
Personally, I would go for it Kate....what have you got to lose. I would think the vetting part would be at the outset, before you got near to a lorry. :y

It is recorded though terbert and remains on file so needs to be declared for any CRB check ;)

Yes, I totally agree, Lizzie....I was trying to determine the difference in severity as against a fine or more serious punishment :y Where it came in a scale of, say 1 to 10

On that it depends on what the precipitant of the caution does next and what crime they committed. If they re-offend then the caution can be taken into account, and depending on the offence that the caution covered it will detirmine further action being taken by the CPS. :y
-
I've got a feeling that I'm going to get rejected but I'll give it a try anyway.
-
I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm, but times are really bad for the recovery industry!
We're struggling, and have been put on a reduced week. Speaking to Ontime drivers and staff, they're in an equally bad situation, especially as their pay is highly dependant on the jobs they are given. Kavanaghs have just laid off 42 drivers.
I would have to be pretty desperate to be taking a self employed recovery job at the moment, especially in London where traffic means that the number of jobs you can do are seriously limited.

Thanks. So I don't need to declare a caution?

C&S said I would be able to earn £20,000 working in central London.
Do you think they might be exaggerating?

I've not read all the posts but a word of caution about recovering vehicles for the police.
A very good friend of mine and his son gave up their business recovering cars for the police. The first occasion, the son went to pick up a car and take it to the pound for forensic examination and was followed by some people who certainly didn't want any tests done on the car and they got very violent putting my friends son in hospital to get to the car to burn it out.
The police inspector said it was a one off and they would secure all vehicles and accompany the recovery driver to the pound and please carry on............. They did and on the second and last time the recovery vehicle was followed, my friend just reversed at speed down a one way street and beat a hasty retreat to escape the drug dealers who wanted the car back.

Kate...what Cleggy says is true. I can remember my son in law being called out to Police collections, that were the result of 'criminal activity' and had to have escorts to and from, for instance, 'pikey sites' and certain estates in the Slough area.
Be careful, as Cleggy says. However, you may come across this at all in your particular area. :y

Many thanks for your help.
I'll just tell them and hope for the best. I would really like to do this so I hope I don't get rejected.
Kate honesty is the best policy, in my business (which is security we are vetted by going back 10 years work record with no gaps, credit checked,a crb check, and lastly the area you work in as to be ok'ed by the local plod force which to be fair in my last job i was in and out of banks and C.I.T depots all day)...if you have had a caution and omitted to tell them then they will take a very dim view of that, but being up front and honest they will look at it and see if you are deemed a risk...but if it is your only blot on your copy book...they will possibly let it go...so i would apply..you have nothing to lose tbh

Thanks, I'll just be honest with them. The rules have changed recently - it's all a bit confusing with this spent and unspent business.
I'll just say what happened and then they can decide.

How many hours a week would you be working? It's a 24 hour business, so there are always going to be nights, or at least on call. That really screws up your life.
How would it be paid? A small retainer plus commission per job seems likely, so you are entirely at the mercy of the controller. How would you stand on Police jobs that don't get paid - my old boss reckoned that at least 25% were 'free'.
£20k makes me feel well paid, which hasn't happened in a while!

I'm going in tomorrow so hopefully I'll find out more. It sounds like a terrible job tbh.
Hardly any work, then when you do get a job you get chased round London by gangsters shooting at you like in a Bruce Willis movie.

Still being called a CRB check in the police and CPS circles I work in, but of course the new DBS check is in force and habits take a long time to die out! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)
The times I still hear "RTA" being used by non-police sources when of course it is now a "RTC" ::) ::) ;)

It looks like the caution isn't going to be a problem so I'm going to give the job a try.
Thanks very much for all the advice. :y
Brilliant as usual. :y
-
Put it this way...
If you don't declare it and a search reveals it then you automatically don't get the job, as you have been dishonest.
Declare it, they'll look at it and say 'Ok, that's a relatively minor spent conviction. When can you start?'
Good luck :y

Some of my team work in prisons/police stations and the background check has resulted in several of them not being able to work there due to family members chosen "career" paths. I have had a caution as a youth and always declared it but it has never showed up on the dozen or so CRB's I have had, I personally would declare it to be safe but keep quiet about family mambers !
