After discovering last night that my exhaust has grown a pony tail I've established the back box needs replaced. I've picked up another one from eBay, just wondering what's involved in replacing the back box? I'm no mechanic but to cut costs I try to do what I can myself. Car is a 2001 2.2.

Biggest problem is going to be getting it off the Mid Sections if its rusted on.
-
Yep apart from the rust issue reasonably straightforward ;)
-
baffles have collapsed, if back box is buggered you can bet the mid sections are flucked too.
Get a whole new cat back system for a 2.0 from Eternal :y
Got the above on my 2.2, works well :y

I had a read somewhere on here that the 2ltr single pipe is more noisier :y

I agree that the 2.0ltr exhaust is noisier, its also cheaper and works just as well. have it fitted to mine. as to replacing boxes and centre sections, if you have access to a pit/lift by all means have a go but on your back on tarmac it aint no FUN!! as you have precious little room to move.

Don't agree with the above, have had a 2.2 with full old school GM exhaust, double walled all the way, when they were good.
Now running Eternal cat back 2.0, no real difference to be honest, still silent at 80mph cruise :y

Thanks guys, I think the rust thing will cause me problems. I'll probably just pay a local garage a few quid to swap it over for me. I reall hope the centre sections don't need changed, could do without that expense just now :(

just got a back box on my elite for £45 supplied and fitted here in corby... spurious part obviously, but i dont care ...!

My new backbox arrived today so I'm going to get my local garage to fit it for me.
I also removed a massive pile of sound proofing from the exhaust.. then on the drive home the engine management light came on. Related? :-\

I would have thought if the exhaust bolts are that rusty you could just hacksaw (or angle grinder) them off and replace the bolts? :-\

I have changed just the back box on 1 2 litre. I had to remove the central and back box from the car, hacksaw off the clamps, then separate central section and back box with hammers, heat and patience. Unless you can do it yourself, and like a challenge, I should buy central and rear sections and let a garage but them on.
