Starting as a trial soon apparently.I thought it had been kicked into the long grass,but....
http://cars.aol.co.uk/2013/06/13/government-to-press-ahead-with-80mph-speed-limit/?ncid=webmail3

Its about time really, the limit was brought at the time of the Ford Anglia and Morris 1100 etc, times and braking ability, tyres etc have moved on :y
Sorry I mentioned tyres :-\
-
About time I thought it was 80mph anyway ::)
-
You need to be doing a minimum of 80mph now to get into the overtaking lane on a motorway. A lot of traffic generally moves around 85mph on motorways these days.
-
Before 1965 there were no speed limits on the motorways, and many car magazines would 'max' the test cars on a suitable stretch of the M1.
E-Type Jaguar ......150 MPH, anyone?...... :y :y :y :y :y

Unless you have a BMW/Audi/Merc

Only the press cars could do the 150 apparently....

Managed to see 150mph on my old E-type on M1 (@ about 3am), post 1965 - mine was a 3.8 (the better engine in a lot of peoples opinion)

i thought it was 90 ;D ;D
-
I think the limit should be dropped to 60 mph!!!! :)
Reason being that I've taken to poodling at 75 mph to save fuel and my licence. ::)
If everyone else was doing 60 ish, it would feel like I was driving much faster and I'd feel young and virile again!! 8) ;D

Most people do :( If you do 75-80 feels like your going backwards ... 100mph + some of them in the outside lane :(
-
its already 80-85 whats new?
-
Having driven half of the M25, avoiding rush hours, at 55-60 yesterday with a trailer on the back, I'm not convinced I could have made significantly better progress without the pikey attachment, TBH, 80 MPH limit or not. ::)

I can barely believe...
...are we moving away from the blanket/cover all ills "sipped kills" attitude?
An attitude that inspires the "I can be as useless inattentive and dangerous a driver as I like as long as I'm not going too fast" approach to driving... which also gives me a chance to make driving 3rd 4th or 5th on the list of things TO DO WHILE DRIVING....?
Ahem<and breath>sorry rant over.
No way. :o

I take it you haven't been down the A339 lately? ::)

My air freshener behaves erratically above 80mph - just an observation
-
How long before it is part of an EU directive to standardise speed limits in the EU?
Germany seems, quite rightly, to be very resistant to imposing a blanket speed limit on their Autobahns. Accident and death rates make them their safest roads. Of course their Eco yogurt knitting, tree hugging green party want a blanket limit as the extra CO2 causes AGW is helping to stave off our next ice age.

Thats what i mean , if they increased it to 110 , Mr Rep man will do 120 ::) So we all know most drive at 80 and will never admit it ... cops dont blat an eyelid that 80 is ok , 90 well then they mite pull you ::) 100-110 goodbye licence ;D

If German autobahns had our drivers on them, I reckon there would be carnage. Not that german drivers are any good, but they do at least recognise that they need lightning fast reactions if they are going to sit up your jacksie at 140 MPH. ;D
The average UK sales rep pissing about with his i-phone and his i-drive in the fast lane like he's the only driver on the planet wouldn't last more than a couple of miles.
-
In reality, the speed limit hasn't been 70mph for years.
Most traffic coppers seem quite happy to let you drive along at 80 - 85 as long as the road / traffic conditions allow.
Anymore then that and you tend to get a evil stare as they pull alone side of you.
Raising it to 80 will just mean that the drivers out there who can barely drive at 70mph safely for whatever reason will feel that they have to increase there speed even further which will cause further accidents.
Keep it at 70 for me, get rid of all fixed camera's and get more coppers on the road with the mandate of ............ If you have our boot down but are driving in a responsible and safe manor then a little stare should be all that is needed to keep drivers in check BUT if your driving like a complete cock then you should be banned from the road and given a rather good kicking ;) ;)
Speed does not kill, dickhead drivers do >:( >:(

With a car that will pull 6k rpm at wot in 2nd without putting the eml on? Nope, not me officer. ;D
-
o crap does this mean ive to drop my speed by 40 mph lol.
who me officer :D
-
Level the playing field and deristrict the trucks and coaches :y
-
70mph limit introduced as a result of the AC Cobra being tested on M1 if I recall correctly.Personally I have long maintained that speed does not kill,it's the mis-use of speed that does the damage.Sadly I think no matter what the limit is set at you'll still get the dumbo doing 50mph in the middle lane for the next 200 miles!
-
Current (2011-15) ACPO guidelines are:
* 79mph-86mph Fixed penalty (£60 + 3 points) or speed awareness course
* 87-95mph Fixed penalty (£60 + 3 points)
* > 95mph Summons, max £1,000 and disqualification
So I assume it will now be ok up to 90mph (80+10% + 2mph) :o
-
Seems to be a daft idea to me. They are restricting the speed of vans and lorries and then going to increase the speed for cars. To much speed differential I think.
Still I will will stick to bumbling along with the vans and lorries ;D

In truth there are not enough traffic police or speed cameras on motorways to stop everyone running in the highlighted speed zone. For some time, to my knowledge, unless you are driving dangerously, committing an offence besides speeding, are in a dodgy looking motor, have a marker on your car, or activate the ANPR you will be allowed to go on your way up to 90 mph (this was certainly true in North Hampshire when a close friend was the Superintendent of traffic there!) as the traffic police just cannot be constantly engaged in issuing speeding tickets when far more serious issues are arising all around the few doing the job. It is purely a case of what is practical.
Will an 80 mph limit make any difference to police enforcement? Maybe not, as the same constraints will apply and with resources being in short supply.................... :P :P :P

I got done once for 34 in a 30. Bastards.

Speed limits are a complete waste of time
Nobody ever sticks to them.

You will. That is over 10% above the limit in a built up area which (in my opinion) is far worse than speeding on the motorway. ;) ;)
-

Most of us do away from the motorways. ;) ;)
If there were no speed limits there would be chaos and mayhem, with much death, on our roads :y :y

Actually it wasn't in a built up area. It was where an unrestricted country road began to enter a village. This road entered and exited several villages and the speed limit kept changing from 60 to 30 and back. They had cunningly put a speed camera before the village just where the limit changed down. I very rarely exceed the speed limit plus 10%.
-
If all cars drove at the speed limit, the roads would be far safer.
Therefore, I'm all for higher speeds, but everyone must drive at those speeds, ie the speed limit becomes the mandatory speed. None of this eco-driving Miss Daisy 'dangle berries' that is clutterly and choking our roads.
Speed has never killed, only slowing down can be fatal.

Agreed - still got my Antiguan driving licence :y :y :y But the roads generally are like UK roads - full of potholes ;D ;D
-
Will have to get a new one next time I go back there... I stupidly got the 12$EC one which lasts about as long as a pint of milk ::)

no mate-its the sudden stop that is fatal ;)
