Hi All,
Thanks to the brilliant guides (better than Haynes) I have done far more than I would have considered in the past :o
I have some photos of parts of the engine that illustrate the questions I have
(http://www.dropbox.com/s/c8ydeb362nng58d/Bag%20pipe%20.jpg)
As you can see (I hope) there is a lot of oil down both the pipes connecting to the plenum and down to the solid lump they connect to (I don't know name :-[) Do I strip the whole thing down and clean all the oil away?
The breather pipes are also quite oily, do I clean these up too?
As can be seen from the above the leak was coming from this side of the water pump (drip on bolt head) I assume that I will have to take the back cambelt cover to see if the leak is elsewhere, there is no evidence looking down from top of engine.
Finally for now, the whole engine below the cam covers is covered in oil. I want to wash this off with a water soluble engine cleaner. Should i remove the alternator before I do this and is there anything else that should be removed prior to such a procedure?
Many thanks for all the feedback, I hope the pics show, preview just had a picture icon!

Your water leak is probably a failed water pump o-ring - best to replace pump (comes with new o-ring)- howto on here - no need to strip back any further to replace pump ;)
Suggest breathers probably need cleaning - see howto - your pic shows inlet manifold not breathers ;)
From the colour of te oil in pic1 - an oil & filter change wouldn't go amiss!
-
Thanks dbug, how did you do that, I cant get it to make things public on my puter!
Getting pump, cam kit, oil filter & cam cover gaskets from andyc, he did a bit of shopping around to get a better price for me, which was very kind of him :)
What about the oil on outside of engine, everything you touch is covered in it!!!?
Cheers

Leaking cam cover gaskets probably, caused by blocked breathers.

Whole engine is overdue a service by the look of it.The "coolant" looks very rusty.Oil cooler failure may have been approaching.
What can be seen of the throttle body/butterfly area suggests breathers haven't been cleaned for a long time.
Have another read of the guides and clean the breathers etc. flush cooling system through before refilling with new GM red coolant, and give it an oil and filter change. It will make a world of difference to the reliability and longevity of the engine.
Check for leaking camcover gaskets (oil in the plug wells is usual giveaway) and follow the guide and change them if needed (and it would seem that they may be).
Take your time, and ask questions if your unsure. :y
You may well have caught it just before it got to the stage where one thing goes wrong after another.Weve all been there. ;)

Thanks all,
An oil & oil filter change is going to be done along with cam covers :y
As it is such a mess, is it prudent to put an oil flush through & should I clean the tappet spacers that are self levelling by oil pressure?
If its in the guides I can do it, I might not know the names etc, but I'm practically minded & can follow good guides ;D

never use oil flush-just re-do oil / filter change again --flush's tend to knacker an engine really fast mate :y

no worries mate :y glad you asked here first -could have been costly mate ;)

Agreed a couple of quick oil & filter changes best :y
Flushing oils generally displace all sorts of crap, some of which don't drain out and can clog oilways etc.

Brill info,on the question of engine flush, would it be better to use "cheap" oil to run through a couple of times and then fill up with the best oil? (In the context of mayo in the engine after HG failure)?

Yes,a couple of short changes probably better than using engine flush :y
-
Thanks geez!
Got to get to that point yet....lol

worth a bottle of wynns lifter fluid in with the oil if your lifters are tap tap tapperty :)
-
Do you add the wynns lifter fluid to the first oil change or second? And how long do I run the engine with the first new oil before changing it?

if the lifters are tapping I BELIEVE it should go like this:
change oil
300 miles later change oil again and add Wynns
change oil again in normal 3k miles.
anyone concur?
