Title: Cylinder down

Hi guys

I'm hoping some one can help me out a little I have a omega 2.5 v6 24v auto w reg only have her a wk now but the engine sounds abit rough like its missing on a cylinder. It's does seem to pick it up but soon drops it again. The car doesn't seen to have power either only when all cylinders are running does she have power. I've checked plugs and leads they seem fine. I don't know much about cars so feel free to lol. Could it be the icv as the little rubber pipe had plumbers tape on it and my other half has taken it off and put some other tape back on in its place. Any advise please hoping its not something more expensive.

A knackered coil pack will cause the symptoms you describe , best to take the coil pack off and check for damage ie: split outer casing caused by water damage  :y

Might be worth a paper clip check to see if there are any codes stored, but coil pack or possibly a dodgy plug lead would be the most likely suspects. I assume when you checked the plugs that there was no oil in the plug wells? This can commonly cause a misfire due to leakage from the cam cover gaskets.

No oil in the wells and plugs look new except for one thats is slightly tan. All leads fit tightly too. Where is the coil pack and how easy to remove. Also how will I know if it is that.

Coil pack is right at the back of the engine underneath the windscreen scuttle,removing wiper blades and said scuttle makes the job easier :y

If the history of the plugs is unknown or they have been on the car 20k or more it might be worth changing them anyway. You might have a dodgy one.

If it's not that I would take the coil pack out and have a look at it. Often when they fail, it's obvious that water has got in and rotted the core, as the plastic moulding starts to burst around it.

If this has happened, it's worth checking that the scuttle seals well above the coil pack, as water dripping onto it may have hastened its' demise.

I personally found it a hell of a lot easier to go one step further and remove the inlets to get to the coilpac. by just removing the plenum I personally didn't have any room to shufty it out of there.

inlets off and theres a huge hole for it to come out  :y

oh and you can get to the retaining bolts a lot easier too  :y

Zoe20 I had an experience with my plenum hissing after I had removed it for full servicing and cleaning out the breathers, plus replacing the DIS pack.

No matter what I did it ran rough and lacked power as your does, until I discovered the 'top hat' rubber seal was missing between the underside of the black breather unit on top of the plenum and the plenum itself. Put a new one in and it then ran perfectly.

Before stripping too much off the engine, I advise you to check that first especially if there is a hissing sound. :D :D ;)

Replaced my coil pack with plenum on , mind you im still getting over it 10 months later  ::) ;D

replaced the coil pack in under an hour on the 3.0, plenum off, inlet off, scuttle off to maximize room. Worth following the guide, if you do replace the coil pack, make sure its the right type :)

Don't know why people insist on moving it, its quite accessible from its default location.  :-\

if its not all corroded up like steves and it looks good, you can do a resistance check using a multimeter on it to see if that throws up any odd figures.

new development on car. tried to take my son to school this morning but lost power going up a steep hill couldnt get the car to go over 20mph when i tried to use the kickdown the revs went up but had a screeching noise come from engine. (there is oil in there) pulled up at a bus stop and ask my son to get the bus. started back towards home, managed to get the car to 30mph but she was kangarooing. when i reach a set of lights the revs kept falling like she was going to stall. please some one help. thank you all for your replies.
