Title: Extra thickness Head Gasket
Post by: PhilRich on 22 June 2013, 11:50:40
Do any of you fellow travellers know where I can source an 'Extra thick' Head Gasket for a 2.2 petrol Omega Saloon?
I gave my car to my stepson 6 weeks ago as I now have an Estate and he's blown the headgasket in spectacular style! >:(
The car had a head skim & gasket change almost 4 years ago so i'm guessing there wont be any more to play with this time and AndyC says VX don't make a thicker version. :(
Any suggestions greatly appreciated :y

If no gasket available then maybe look out for a secondhand head  :-\ there are breakers here that may be able to help.  :y

Do you know how much was previously taken off it?

Does it actually require a skim?

Any competent workshop should know the extent to which the head can be skimmed and will advise whether this is possible. Most engines will take a lot of skimming before there's an issue.

Worst case - get a 2nd hand head.

Hello Kevin, thanks for the reply :y
When the head was last done at a professional auto engineering works it was skimmed by 15 thou, more to clean up the mating face than anything else as on that occassion the engine was not cooked and the head gasket gave way over a period of time and didn't warp the head. This time however, my son neglected to take heed of the low water level warning and overheated it which has subsequently made the gasket 'give' spectacularly at cylinder no. 4 again. Anyhoo, the head is coming off tonight & I will be able to assess the remains and see what is the best way forward. :y

Thanks very much for the link sassanach, it is much appreciated. I will be able to measure the head thickness & check the Plane Surface for distortion later this evening hopefully, but GM say in TIS2000 that the Z22XE head cannot be resurfaced full stop! As we all know, that is a tad anally retentive of them since a head skim is practically a 'Right of Passage' for a Desmond! ;D :y
