A bit of an unusual problem I think.The retaining nut on my steering idler keeps working loose.I can torque it up and within a few miles it starts to work loose again,allowing too much movement.I can actually feel when it has started to work loose as the front end becomes more blancmange like.I have tried a nut from another car,and its still the same.
Should it be loctited in place ? worth buying a new nut to see if that helps ? Is there a GM part number for the nut ? :-\

Is there room to get a star or spring washer in there if so try that. :y

Possibly,but standard fit is just a flat washer,so Im still curious as to the cause of the problem. :-\

If it is a crimped type lock nut :-\ then I suspect it has lost its crimping effect so a new nut should sort it. :y don't know part number though I am sure somebody here will know it though :y

Is it a nyloc nut Albs? If so try a new one, if not try a nyloc nut ;) Other options, loctite, some form of spring washer, stake the nut.

Had a look.Standard nut isn't nyloc,but a new nyloc nut is probably the best option I would think. :y
Upper nut is nyloc but lower one isn't.Unless both cars have it changed for the wrong type of nut. :-\

Try the thread itself, as a last resort you could drill a cross hole on the stud and use a castellated nut and split pin.
No matter how you look at it if the tread is buggered, your flogging a dead horse.
Might be a new steering idler mount?

actually hold on a moment--the idler arm is bushed-correct-and the center pin is machined so nut goes to end of thread and stops at wider part of pin---so either washer is to big-or you got 2 washers on there-meaning as you turn-so does nut
