Title: MASSIVE thanks to the artist formally known as Martin42 and Symes
Post by: Webby the Bear on 24 June 2013, 23:33:27
......more commonly known as Magic Tree 42  :-X :-X :-X ;D ;D

ANYWAY...

I'm doing my rear drums on my Ford today. jack it up, put on stands, get the wheel off, get the dust cover off, remove the axle nut (surprisingly easy), remove the drum, take photo of set up, remove springs, remove shoes, clean everything, lubricate the bosses, lubricate the adjuster assembly...............

i'm thinking I've won this battle and this is a piece of piss.... naïve... oh how naïve  :'( :'( :'( :'(

I fit the trailing shoe and retaining pin. fit the bottom spring and use the leading shoe as leverage to get that in place, and then ill use pliers to stretch the large upper spring in to position.........

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA NO CHANCE!

Anyway in the process of fighting with this spring I obviously over extend the wheel cylinder and the f*cker starts leaking  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

quick call to GSF motor factors and by the grace God they have a wheel cylinder in stock (two in fact, and I purchase both cos im the sort that likes to anticipate fek ups....if I did it to the O/S I can do it the the N/S  ::))

in the mean time Martin has come to my rescue and popped over. my mam has bought the parts to me and me and martin proceed to replace the wheel cylinder, replace shoes, replace the drum, adjust and finally bleed the air out.

Then we do the other side.

without fek ups from me this time I peel back the wheel cylinder boots on the N/S and that appears to be leaking too.... lucky I bought two!!!

so replaced that, replaced shoes, bled that and all is good with the world.

So a massive, MASSIVE thanks to martin who has helped me on a number of occasions and also when ive been in dire need. god knows what I would have done without his expertise!!!!

and not to forget Symes who contacted me to help with my ATF fluid change. he used his magical powers and I now know the capacity and type of fluid needed.....something that believe it or not ford could NOT tell me!!!!!  :o :o :o :o :o

CHEERS BOYS YOURE THE BEST!!!!!!!

just to let you all know what I did......

when refitting the shoes I was trying to fit the shoes both in place and THEN fit the return/retaining springs. What I should have done (if I'd have interpreted the Haynes guide properly) was to in effect fit the shoes and springs away from where they lived and ''prised'' them on. This would not have compromised the wheel cylinder.

BUT you live 'n' learn. I will not make that mistake again!  ::) ;D :y

I basically tried to copy the set up that I did on a Vx Tigra that we had at college. but clearly that was a totally different set up to this ford  ::)

Well done all.  It's what OOF is about.

Only point I would make is not to use carb cleaner when cleaning brakes where rubber seals etc are present. Use brake cleaner. In my experience carb cleaner is a tax harsh and can soften certain rubber type materials causing early failure.

Well done for effort though!   :y

Well done Webby!

I tried to dismantle the Jag handbrake last night (so it's lighter to post off; it's all off the long-since-deceased car anyway) and the brake linings fell off the shoes, then the self adjuster fell apart, spring flew across the garage... ;D

Yep, normal method is to fit the springs to the shoes and then swear a lot when levering them into place and the fitting retaining springs and clips.  ::) :o ;D

Well done OOFers for coming to the rescue.  :y :y :y

And good to see the OOF spirit in action.  It actually gives me a pleasant, warm feeling (no, I haven't pissed myself again) - knowing that the lumps of hardware I've cobbled together have enabled such wonderful collaboration.
