So around town with windows down in recent weather (really must get the aircon fixed on the 2.2) - I've heard this squeeking from the rear, it does not appear linked to braking, or road surface, but applying the handbrake did change its pitch & in some cases stopped it. Also after a stint on the motorway, I stopped and touched the rear off-side alloy & it was very hot.
So all signs for me point to a sticking handbrake cable?
Thoughts? :-\ :y

slacken it off a touch then- :y :y

Cheers. I need to find a gravel road and run a couple of tests ::)

As symes says Mark, it's probably the adjuster at the back of the drum partially seized. Try moving forward & back at low speed several times, applying & releasing the handbrake repeatedly. This may release it but you will still need to dismantle it to clean & lubricate it with copperslip or similar sooner rather than later :y

Cheers. Yes tried that. Slowing car with handbrake, also driving while applying & releasing it.
Did fix the squeaking, but still makes odd noise every so often. Think need to take wheel off to take a look :)
Cheers. Chaps :y

Strip the rear brakes and investigate. I wouldn't expect a hot hub after a motorway stint - if the shoes were binding, they'd soon wear enough not to :-\

The allot was considerably hot, near side rear was practically stone cold in comparison. After this, had 8 mile town run and it was a no way near as hot.

When you strip the brakes make sure the hub turns freely :y
Had a similar issue with my first pos vectra. Handbrake cam had seized in the caliper cooking all the grease out of the hub. When vx finally conceeded there was a problem the mechs couldn't turn the wheel by hand ::)
