Title: Could the NHS be blocking a dongle?
Post by: Vamps on 01 July 2013, 21:59:48
swmbo is in hospital, so decided to take in a laptop and my dongle, plugs into usb port, I tested the dongle on the laptop before taking in, all well, as expected cos Miss Vamps has often used the dongle on that laptop.

Good strong signal, but when connecting message come up 'not able to connect' apparently it worked for 10 minutes this morning, but not last night, I arrived assuming she had done something wrong.... ;) ::) ::) But no, the same message........... ???

Someone else, with a dongle the size of a phone tried his and his worked....... ::) ::)

Funny how it suddenly does not work, blimey it sort of worked in the Lakes..... :D :D

Dongle is 3 phones work OK

Signal strength is only part of the equation, signal quality is what really matters and there will be plenty of environmental issues you have to contend with (building construction & layout, other electrical devices, etc).

When I was doing the weekly chemo trip, I found the only way I could get a signal when I was on the ward was if I had the phone taped to the window, although 3 have been having countrywide issues just recently so maybe it's just them.

Being 3, penetration into the building will be an issue as well, affecting signal QUALITY.

Both of the posts above are spot on! 3 is not the best network (all to do with wavelength/frequencies used). NHS are unlikely to block a mobile signal intentionally but buildings fabric and other electrical activity will affect signal quality rather than strength.

Thank you for your comments, I took by laptop in, as it is new, and tried that, it seems to be working fine - she is much happier, being to contact her friends, as she is getting seriously peed off............. :( :( >:(

also depends on ward location---x/ray areas etc--some wards--no phones allowed-equipement :y
