As I now have the rad out as part of my AC compressor and condenser swap, and as the rad has some bashed in fins, and is 12 years old, I shall replace it to save more work later. Can anyone recommend a good quality pattern supplier for these?
TIA :y :y :y

Brilliant, thanks Rob. Have you used these, or are they known good quality?
-
Yep, used them, very good quality Chris

Thanks again Rob. Ordering now. :y :y :y

Not used their Omega ones, but I got one for the little Rover from there, looked good enough quality.
Can't comment on longevity, as that car has long gone to make Beanz tins
-
I have used them numerous times, all good quality.
-
I have had two Omega radiators from them - quick delivery, good quality, and no subsequent issues :y

Got one on order now, :y :y :y

Late to this as been away .... make sure you get the right one !!!! When I had my problems with radiator they insisted that they knew which one I needed .. BUT THEY WERE WRONG !!! - as were several other places .. :(
You need the radiator with the mounting points for the external ATF cooler .. they might try and tell you the ATF cooler is internal ...also, the top "lip" is different and that is, in part, how the ATF cooler is located.
Due to severe time constraints I got one from VX .. expensive but it fitted perfectly

Cheers Nige, I'll ring them AM. :y

Thanks to Entwood I checked with Car Cool today and the rad they were going to send me had an integral oil cooler. Clearly I don't want this as I have a separate ATF cooler to fit on the front of the rad. Looking at other pattern suppliers, ECP, and CarParts4Less and another who want £364, they all seem to do the same type with in-built ATF cooler. VX is £234 +VAT so I would be grateful if someone knows of a supplier who supply the correct type. :y :y :y
-
Just spoken with CAF, and they can supply a Hella for £105.99 +VAT without the integral cooler. Any experience of Hella rads? :-\
-
Apologies for the bump, Has anyone used Hella Rads?
-
In partnership with German firm "Behr" who have over 100 years manufacturing exp. of vehicle rads. Should be OK Chris

Thanks Rob, you will no doubt have noted the business about an integral cooler above. It seems like all the cheaper ones are made like this, as they supposedly will fit OK, BUT, I very much doubt they will have the mounting threads for the separate ATF cooler, AND you are left with a smaller rad. >:( >:( >:(
-
My pattern radiator has a built in atf cooler. No noticeable loss of performance inspite of a fubared thermostat ::)

Did it have mounting threads to take your own ATF cooler, or did you connect to the integral one?
-
None of the above ::)
'Smanual ;D

Ouch ;D ;D ;D

I've picked up the Hella Radiator, and despite their assurances, it does have an integral ATF cooler. However, this only appears to be a small brass tube running vertically in the centre of the RH plastic section of the rad, with inlet and outlet bosses drilled into the plastic. Otherwise it will fit the car OK and my separate ATF rad will bolt to the front OK.
If this is all that the integral ATF cooler consists of, that is, unless it has capillaries integrated with the main rad that I can't see, firstly, as Al indicates above, I cannot think that it will affect the cooling properties of the rad. But secondly, while I have no need to do so anyway, I would not fancy using such a cooling device for my ATF, as any overheating of the main coolant would transfer immediately to the ATF. Indeed, the ATF would be always running at Rad temp. ??? ??? ???

The ATF cooler is in the "cool" side of the rad. so the water in there should not be that hot unless the engine is under a lot of load or in traffic. I'm not sure ATF temperature is that critical, to be honest. The cooler is just there to stop it getting so hot that the fluid starts to break down, and I'm guessing that little pipe did the job, or not as the case may be, seeing as they later went to a "proper" cooler in front of the rad.! ;)
I would imagine aftermarket parts manufacturers find it easier to make a single radiator that fits both applications rather than maintain another part on their inventories and save a few pence by deleting the cooler.

You have it spot on Kevin, I've just checked the TD, and it uses exactly this type of ATF cooler in the Rad, so clearly my doom & gloom above was unjustified. I also had an interesting chat wth Gerald at Car Cool, who is very helpful incidentally, who has broken these down, and the brass 'tube' is a double tube with spirals to assist swirling of the ATF. As I've never had a problem with the TD cooling, I am going to fit this one to the 3.2 as it is £100 less than the VX one. :y :y :y
-
Yup, integral coolers are minimal, just in the cool side of rad.
I'd have no concerns
-
As anyone who has replaced one of these will know, they are a 'snug' fit. My Hella rad would not easily drop in as the mounting clips attaching the ATF cooler were fouling something. I removed it and measured it at its widest point, and it was 1.5mm wider than the GM one removed. Sadly it was fouling the pipe from the bottom of the power steering pump that runs across the N/S of the rad then across the front of the condenser, and this now has a nasty looking gouge in it, so I will change that before putting the rad back in, which I have now reduced in width slightly.
Does anyone know where that pipe is going to along the front? Seems an odd route to the pump. It has a jubilee clipped attachment at each end so should swap out OK with the bumper off. :y
-
Isn't that the power steering fluid cooler :-\
-
I had a quick look and think it may go to the steering box,but Im not certain.Too many things in the way at the moment. Will try to delve a bit deeper in the morning. :y
-
You could well be right Albs :y
I might have gotten confuddled with the Granada arrangement ::)
-
Don't think the Omega has a PAS cooler, but I could be wrong.Ive pulled enough of them apart to know these things, but then theres the Albsiemers....... ::)
-
Had the bumper off mine tother week, and I couldn't tell you what's behind it :-[
-
IIRC, the power steering fluid runs through steel pipes that run across by the radiator somewhere, then back into rubber for the trip down the offside chassis box section to the steering box. The steel pipes probably act as a fluid cooler in addition.
-
It's one of those! :y :y :y

Just re-read this, The pipe is ally painted black. :y
-
Definitely painted black. Not sure if its ally or steel though. Now got one sat on my bench so I might check in the morning out of curiosity. :D
-
I hoper that's mine sat on your bench Albs ::) I must admit, I assumed it is ally as it damaged fairly easily. :-\

Its yours if you want it mate, but as I said in the PM (I did send one didn't I ?) parcelling it up to post is going to be the challenging bit. ::) ;D
