Title: Leptospirosis ( Weils Disease)
Post by: cleggy on 15 July 2013, 09:19:01
It appears our Yellow Labrador Niblet has contract this bloody terrible illness :(
Last week he was off his food not touching his Kibble and only a little chicken, being old 10.5 years we thought he was just getting fussy. He was starting vomiting his po was little and runny and he was really lethargic some of which we put down to this hot weather as he was drinking a lot. On Wednesday he was laying on his back legs akimbo and I noticed his tummy was yellow, further inspection showed his eyes and gums were bright yellow, his pee was like lucozade.
Went to the vet thinking the worst with his liver and after blood tests and a scan he had intravenous antibiotics followed by two types of oral antibiotics one the size of a old shilling and 1+ 1/2 of the other the size of a tanner twice a day. He is still very lethargic and won't eat so I can't put the pills in a treat he also has to have a powder liver supplement daily and keeps trying to be sick. He has got wise to me pushing then down his throat and puts up a hell of a struggle so does anyone have any ideas of how to get them into him ???

In a way I was relieved that it wasn't C but he is still not at all well and cost me £400 so far but  hopefully he will recover, he was a rescue dog and we couldn't transfer the pet insurance over. We are going to the vet today with Bonzo the Chocolate lab to be inoculated, to protect him and we are keeping to a rigid sterile clean routine because it can transfer to humans. I also water areas where he pees with Jayes fluid

So please be very careful when walking dogs in areas where there are foxes or rats, don't let them drink stagnant water, water from puddles or lick grass. :y

Hope he gets well soon, always very sad to see a pet ill.

I'm always careful to make sure they don't go through the horrible water at the edge of farmers fields, no doubt full of all kinds of things  :'(

Tricky though, especially with our Springer Megan who loves to go rooting through everything.

Sorry to hear this Cleggy, poor old thing (the dog, not you, I think).
It is really hard to stop them doing stuff they like. My dog is always licking grass and I have to have eyes in the back of my head. Kinda spoils our walks a bit.

Thanks guys, the vet gave me a couple of syringes to crush his tablets up and mix them with water, then squirt down his gullet  :y ;D

Another tip she said was that if he's not eating to mix a sugar solution and inject that down his throat. :y

He is looking a bit brighter but it's early days and it's so hot for dogs this weather

Sorry to hear about Niblet. :(

My chocolate Labrador is forever seeking out streams and so on...and he eats grass on occasions.  ::) ::)

TBH, it's practically impossible to stop him unless I keep him on the lead — but then it's vital he has a good run every day.

Hope the pup gets well soon. How on earth your meant to exercise them and prevent all those things is beyond me.

Maybe a treadmill? Dog whisperer style.

Anyway, he needs to get better first. :)

Well Bonzo had his booster jab this morning, they were both due in August so it may be wiser to get them done every 9 months rather than yearly, bit like a cam belt or oil change :y

As an ex Telecom bod, I know only too well how nasty this can be. I used to have to carry a card 24/7 with me, so if I was taken ill, it was something they could check, as it was less well known then.

I'm really glad your Lab is getting better Cleggy, it will be a very worrying time for you all until he gets the all clear :(.  It is more common than most people realise and affects a fair few Humans every year including a few deaths sadly, but the outcome for most people and animals is complete recovery with no long term after effects :y
Give him a Hug and  :-* from us! :y
