Title: Went to Bodiam Castle
Post by: Lizzie_Zoom on 21 July 2013, 14:00:56
Went to Bodiam Castle for the umpteenth time since the age of four yesterday with two grandchildren.  How they loved it! :-* :-* :-* :-*

The 2.5 year old really soaked it all in, and is now busy playing with a toy wooden castle and armoured knights on horseback that we bought him. He even knew where to place the flag poles on his castle.  Shows you are never too young to enjoy a castle and it's history ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Both boys also loved the train ride on the Kent & East Sussex Railway! 8) 8) :D :D :D

GWR 0-6-0 Pannier Tank 1638 at Bodiam Station after pulling our train there:

and T.J. with his castle ;D ;D ;D:

A lovely day all round 8) 8) 8) 8)

PS For those interested Pannier 1638 never carried "GWR" in it's main service days, as it was built in 1951, 3 years after British Railways came into existence.  However, in true Preservation field style she has been blessed with a GWR livery, and how good does she look!  :y :y :y

Indeed :y  In fact I taught the adults around me something as well when I pointed out the stone mason marks applied by them when building the castle in the 14th century so they could be paid for their toil:

.............and I also recorded some of the fascinating "graffiti" that has been applied to the castle walls over the centuries.  Some is of such a high quality, using full italics, that a modern youngster  would never have the patience to do with a knife:

This "show castle" - a hopeless design for a real battle ready example - is such a wonderful time capsule. :y :y
