Hi all,
I think my differential is leaking slightly.
I could try to very carefully tighten the bolt heads I can see.
Does anyone know what socket size I need to tighten them? I have an auto, 2.5TD if thats important
Also is there a way to check the level of the fluid as if it is has been leaking slightly then it could be low?
Thanks guys
Alex

I wouldn't worry too much "they all do that sir"... more likely a seal?
-
Mine does that too. My MOT place said very common not to worry, he pointed out the leak was coming from half way up (looks like round the seal), not the bottom so he thought there should be plenty left in.

If it starts to whine, put some more oil in ::)
-
Ok interesting, I found a guide from Mark from a few years ago about putting oil in.
Question, how do I know if it is at a good level and how do I put more in, I have a big syringe with a tube I can use I think.
Thanks all

When it starts running back out of the filler hole, then its full. :y

Ok excellent,
What kind of oil do I need for this?
Also I hear there could be two different ways to get the filler cap off,
One is a T50 torx and the other is an allen key?
Can anyone say for sure?
Also what colour should the oil be and should I try to remove as much of the oil as possible and then refill or should I just check to see if it needs anymore and then if not then leave it?
Thanks

AP 80 OR 90.
Filler could be either torx or allen. You will have to have a look to find out.
Oil should be oil coloured ;D......light golden colour.
If it is,no need to change it,just top it up. I think. ;)

Right ok, yes the oil was a golden colour, like new engine oil so thats good.
Question, has the diff been designed to be filled when the rear of the car is lifted up like on ramps or do I need to try to add extra/less due to the angle that the car will be when its rear is lifted up slightly if you see what I mean?
Procedure below is
1. locate the filler plug
2. twist it out using either a T50 or an 8mm allen key
3. If it is up to the level oil will pour out, if not add more in
4. Using the syringe and tube add in some oil until it starts coming out
5. Replace the plug and tighten, clean up at the same time
-
All correct. :y
Designed to be at full level when car is sitting level. ;)
-
Ok excellent so keep adding until it pours out, refit the plug, clean it up and then done.
Wonderful
