Later in the year I will be buying a plasma TV, or should I go for LCD?

Having paid £429 for a 26" Hitachi TV 24 years ago I feel today you dont get what you pay for as you used.

The Hitachi TV was faultless.  I repair in all that time, and that was  new PSU, the engineer said that it was common as the problem was caused through turning off the set at the button every night, had stand by of been used then it may never have had a repair.

I have a 15" LG LCD tv and it seems to lipsync issues at times.
My bother has a brand new Samsung LCD and has complained of the same thing at times, but I feel this could be an issue with Sky (or is it)

My choice at the mo is the Panasonic Vierra range with the PZ range or better.

I was going to go for a 42" with an Elite 360 Xbox, basically the bigger the batter was my idea for the gaming.
But it seems to be so many people are saying that 42" is too big.

My living room if I move home will be 4.6 metres Sq so the biggest distance I will be viewing the TV from will be what ever that works out to diagonally.

My Brothers living room is 21' long and he reckons the 42" is too big in there.

My requirements for the TV are colour must be Black.
Must have a minimum of 2 x scarts fitted plus at least 2 x HDMI
Also Need PC 15 Pin input.

Tv will be primarily for gaming with the Elite 360 and my old PS2 connected, but will also have a media centre PC conned allthough I belive this could/can be connected via the Ekite 360.

[size=14]Would welcome any Pro/Cons regards LCD V Plasma?

Any Particular Make/Model Recommendations?

Stand. Pedestal or Wall Mount???

Experiences with own TV's?  Any to stay clear off?[/size]

LCD seems to be best now.

at the mo i would personnally go for the samsungs lcd`s prefferably the series 6 they where flying outa the comet stores before i left and i do like the veira`s me mates had his for 3 years now with no probs at all and he`s thinkin of upgrading to the new hd version...

Thast more to do with the compression techniques used for transmission and some of the proprietary image enhancement algorithms used, its not down to the panel technology.

LCD is by far a better technology now than plasma, it uses considerably less power, runs cooler, has an enhanced life, equals plasma on contrast ratios etc etc....

32"Bravia, the living room isnt that big and it looks great.

No problems, but i have experienced the lip-sync issues from time to time, not that big a problem really.

Well Mark has summed it up with why you should choose LCD.

For starters the difference on your electricity bill will be significant.
LCD uses a LOT less power.

I have a 40" screen in my normal sized lounge and it is fine and is not too big. I think you will be fine with 42". Just make sure it has full 1080P reproduction.

Panasonic Viera PZ range I looked at, and are very highly rated.
If you choose that you won't go wrong.
I went for the Sony 40W3000 and that I can highly recommend (has 3 hdmi inputs, having a spare is useful).

Mark has a Samsung which is basically the same panel as the Sony and is also superb.

All a question of how much you are looking to spend.

I can only concur with the others.  All the advice I have received has completely, without exception, recommended LCD.

Apparently, according to them, the plasma screens can be a real problem in terms of image 'burn-on' and distortion, with failures occuring far too regularly.  The reliability of LCD, the image quality, and price make them the best bet Skruntie. :y

I disagree, Plasma is by far the better format, for a start look at the brightness of a cheap plasma compared to the very best of the LCD's. The movement on screen is far better with my Xbox in HD on my plasma than it ever was on the LCD that now sits in the bedroom.

A plasma has a life that roughly equalls ten years use based on 6 hours per day, and provided it is never exposed to extremes of temperatures should last ok.

LCD like others have said.  Its come a long way recently.

I've had a few LCD TVs now, and I am impressed with the picture and audio quality of my Samsung (though needs the surround amp for action films).  Reliability has not been so good, but I suspect that is a one-off.

I had a Dell 37" previously, excellent set (in its day), let down my buggy software.  The Grundig in the kitchen is good, but digital tuner takes 12s to start, and audio is weak. Have an older no brand Argos special in the bedroom, that is pretty good, but lacks the deep blacks being an older panel.

Plasma suffers many of the traits that CRTs do, causing significant picture degradation after a while.

LCDs have caught up with plasma, both on Contrast Ratio, and the blacks.

Due to reliability, burn issues, picture degradation, power, and complexity, I couldn't recommend plasmas over LCD...

Forget it, ELED technology is not as close as you think.

We are only just trialing a very small low res panel for mobile use and the large screens are 4-5 years away in reality.

Ours doesn't get a lot of use, either.  But then it's a 13 year old 24" ex-rental CRT job.  For the amount we watch, it doesn't seem worth upgrading.  

It's not much cop for watching DVDs though - like looking through a letter box from the other side of the road. :(
