Title: OOF Shelters
Post by: TheBoy on 24 July 2013, 20:08:07
I seem to recall I had both, but need to confirm. After Newent, did anyone else take one home?

I certainly had all 4 sides, as we hadn't used them  :-[

No, I'm trying to put together a genuine list of what was lost, and want to prove as much as possible, so the number of items I can't prove and have to argue about is minimal. I know I can argue my side 100% if I am 100% in the right, and my own morals preclude anything else.

I accept I am going to lose out big time, but to be perfectly honest, my neighbours, Mrs TB and I are the luckiest people around. Nothing else matters.

Even if it was, that would have to come off **YOUR** car insurance. Same as my bike has to come off my bike insurance, and the 2 neighbours with damaged cars have to go via their car insurance, and my neighbour has to go via his buildings and contents for the losses there.

I presume the limit on garage contents wouldn't stretch to a bag of golf clubs anyway. So might save a lot if leg work, to the value of.

I genuinely had 2 sets of golf sticks in the garage. As they were steal shafted, except the drivers, woods and recovery, I should be able to prove them.  That said, I don't particularly want 2 sets.

Two sets of golf bats. You must be a closet Beemer driver. ::)

Ours was limited to £500 garage contents. We had to pay extra to cover what's in there. A decent push bike would easily go over that these days.

I  think that is worth checking, thanks for the 'heads up'.... :y Ours is due soon and not sure what the garage contents cover is, probably not enough to cover everything that is in there...... ::) ::)

There is no mention of a garage limit on our policy, only a total contents cover.

The camping stuff alone would break £500 at least 3 times over. If fact, the racking alone was probably near that.

Just out of interest, when I had my shed broken into losing a Mountfield Roller Mower, Mantis Cultivator and Hedge Trimmers I had no receipts but the insurance company willing accepted neighbours testimony that I owned them. :y :y Which as they borrowed them now and again was perfectly true. ;)

Very well said ...not a nice situation but good to see a touch of reality. If I can do owt to help just shout out, but it sounds like all is under control, albeit things will take some time ..... :(

for all the years I've had contents ins, it'd have worked out, cheaper in the long, to not have had it. That's the gamble we all take .... to insure or not to insure.  ;)

Depends on your policy.

Your mortgage company will insist on building insurance obviously. Some of these policies have varying degrees of contents covered as part of the deal. Some don't.

And remember, a fitted kitchen or bathroom is considered 'contents'

So would the shed be insured as its contents but not part of the house  :-\

Depends on the policy but generally not, I believe - there's usually a specific clause for that kind of thing (to limit their liability, of course..)

Depends on the policy. Usually not. As the base level insurance of "building insurance" only covers what's part of the mortgag loan. I doubt your paying a mortgage that includes a shed. Which is the typical scenario.

You need to check your policy but I'd be suprised if shed contents are covered as minimum level of cover, unless you specified it.

But then, some class an out building or coal bunker as a shed, and if its a lean too type out building attached to the house, the "shed" might be classed as part of the building.

Depends on the type of shed. Some sheds come under vehicle insurance. ;)

As a VERY general rule, Building insurance usually covers what does not fall out if you turn the dwelling upside down and shake it. What does fall out, you need contents insurance for.

Heh, I like that description!

Then there's the level of cover.

As an example. My central heating pipes leaked under the downstairs concrete floor.

Ok, ring the insurance company. "We cover the damage caused by a leak. But NOT repairing the leak."  ...luckily we had pipe work cover with British gas as part of boiler and plumbing insurance for the gas safe certificate. (Although the boiler is not currently covered as the old one was too old, and we haven't told them about the new one, as its currently under warranty, I think ;D ....and on and on and on it goes ::) )

After an event like the pipe leak, you do tend to wonder why you bother paying for insurance at all. Given the number of get outs involved. We never claimed on the pipe leak as the damage was minimal.
