Title: Remove engine and gearbox together
Post by: asiza on 27 July 2013, 17:14:45
Hi everybody
I have opel omega b 2500 (x25xe) with auto gear box.
I want to replace the engine and the gear box.
Can I remove it and put back together?
I think that if I remove the radiators I can take them out as one piece (and then put back).
I will like to hear your opinion

According to the VX College guide to the Omega B, the engine and gear box must be separated for removal:-\

Two ways that they can be removed together...

1.Using a two post lift, disconnect the steering tie rod from the idler and steering box, remove the front suspension top mounts and disconnect the front brake pipes, along with all the other engine to body connections....coolant/vacuum/electrical connections/propshaft/exhaust.

You should, in theory, be able to undo the subframe and transmission mounting bolts and lift the car off the front subframe. Would need alot of thought to the order and way of doing things, but easier to split the engine and box off the car.

2. Remove the bonnet and disconnect everything, the use an engine crane to lift the engine and gear box out. You need a decent crane, with a good reach and the space to lift the engine as high as possible to allow the gearbox to clear the body and subframe.

have done this.
remove both radiators, unbolt propshaft from gearbox, disconnet the wireing looms(plugs near battery box) undo live feed to fuse box, remove exhaust and dwnpipes/ support gbox with trolley jack, remove gbox bracket, undo engine mounts, then lift engine up, pushing the car backwards, as the engine comes up you need to allow the gbox to go down then just lift it out.
cant find the photos i had, would have helped.

Recall seeing a pic of one of TBs TD losing its boat anchor in one piece :-\ iirc the tip of the crane was about. 8' from the floor...

I was there, the trick was to get the car, mega, mega high. Getting it all out in one is better, as is re-fitting. Its a lot easier to bolt gearbox back onto an engine when its all out of the car.

yes, they come in and out of the front quite easily - engine and gearbox together.

you don't even need to remove the bonnet

There is a change to the electronics (and internally in the engine, though this wouldn't cause a compatibility problem) at about halfway throgh 1997, so I think you'd need to keep your 2000 engine management etc.
