Following in from another thread...
How do you get it?
Why does it exist?
Is it "fair" ? As described in the media.
-
Do you have BT Infinity or BT Broadband - very cheap if you have
If you have Sky and want to extend you can do that for nothing I think provided you have BT Infinity or BT Broadband.
If you have your broadband from Sky for example then I think they want £12 a month.
They obviously want to push BT broadband packages and line rentals.
If not using Sky, to get full HD and extra channels you will need to hardwire router to Youview box that they supply FOC. Powerline adaptors will only give you SD.
-
This seems totally illogical to me. I have BT Vision and therefore get the Sport for "free".
However, I would not watch sport if you paid me - so it seems that I'm subsidising those who do want to watch it.
There will be an article on R4 sometime between 12:00 and 13:00 (You & yours) tomorrow about this.
Hey ho
-
We have sky TV and sky broadband. So I guess sky want £12 MORE than we already pay them.
So on the question of fairness, how does paying sky another £12 a month for what we where getting from them, pre Setanta days, as part of our sub, make it fairer? Its £12 extra !
Have offcom/monopolies/fair trade/mergers or whatever the hell they are, thought this through..?
I bet Bt broadband is more than £12 ?
-
I have BT infiniti at home and we signed up a few weeks back. All we had to do was sign up to another 12 month broadband deal and the BT sport is "free"
I am happy with BT broadband so no problem there. I think there channel launches tonight at 6pm. Only real reason for having it is so youngest lad can maybe watch Southampton play football. No comments on that bit please ;D
I think infiniti is about £26 a month, but at least we can still pay quarterly. Don't know any other ISP that will allow that.
-
This is genuine competition - BT Infinity is a premium product and to attract customers BT have taken on Sky which has to be a good thing as I do not want Sky and their high charges having previously relied on Freesat.
I now get Sport for a reasonable price, a nice new Youview box with record and storage and Free HD for 12 months for a fiver so happy. Because I now have both Freesat AND Youview I can record 4 programmes at once - which is very good seeing as I rarely record any!!
I do watch the football so happy with this result and stuff the unfairness for others :D
-
This is a major battle between BT and Sky. BT want to take back more market share in the Broadband department and are giving away media in order to do so.
A very large consulting company is helping BT do this, hence all the public and private spats in the media.
-
Its not fair at all IMO.
Liken the premier league season to, say, Wimbledon.
And lets say Sky have the rights to show it. Offcom (?) say, no, sky have to share it. So sky loose half the championship, and to watch it sky subscribers have to pay extra to see what they ALREADY had.
Further, anyone who now wants to watch half of the championship has to pay the same or similar price to those that could previously see it all. (Because you do pay, no such thing as a free lunch)
You can't put half the games on one broadcasters books and half in the other. One/tother/or not at all.
...harrumph ! ;D

Chris - the situation with Sky domination was simply unhealthy. My last brush with them was over slow broadband speeds, crap movies and paying £80 a month. If I add Sky sports to my BT package (another £20) I am still a lot better off with the additional benefit of 30mbps. It is interventions like this that improve the market and avoid complacency of a virtual monopolist.

Absolutely no argument from me there. It is expensive. I am focusing on football it has to be said. As that's all sky had of interest for me at the time, although the ashes should be on free view IMO.
How much do you pay bt? I presume TV phone and web?

I have BT Infinity Broadband with unlimited anytime calls, with BT Vision. All together Chris I pay £45 per month which I consider good value as it meets all my requirements. :y :y

Add £5 to Lizzie's number for bt sports 1 and 2 and you get also the iPad app to watch bt sports anywhere. 6pm launch approaches.
-
I currently wtch MotoGP on eurosport. Have done for donkeys years. I even used to watch F1 on there back in the day, when I fancied a rest from Muddly Talker.
After this year I cant watch it at all unless I bend over for BT,which I wont do,so from my perspective it not healthy competition at all.
If it was still on Eurosprt but BT were also showing it at as part of a viewing package which was very competitive with SKY prices, then it would be healthy competition imo.
-
I love discussions like this. ;D
I don't pay for any TV except my license, not because I get it for free or anything, I just don't want it. I have "normal" TV and Freeview. That's it. I don't understand where people get the time to watch so much stuff ::)
-
BT Sport is doomed, you get 36 Premiership games compared to 116 with Sky. ESPN has lost all their good stuff.
You can get Sky Broadband, using "infinity" speeds too.
BSkyB's marketing budget last year was more than one billion....
-
i pay none off them now .and don't miss it :y :y

Should also add than ESPN are on the verge of completely withdrawing from Europe, Disney is not investing in Sport any more.
Sky has spent time building portfolio of F1, Cricket, Tennis, Golf. Think BT have quite limited market, shall see. We just had another increased in Subscriber numbers, next quarter results should be interesting :)
-
Its no more unfair than Sky taking all the sport off the FTA channels.
Competition is good, except for the monopoly company, which is why Sky have been having some serious toy throwing sessions.
BT are 100% committed to BT Sport, so be under no illusion that they will pull the plug.
Costs - free if you are a retail BT Broadband customer, however its delivered (Terrestrial, Satelite, IPTV). I stress retail, as if you have a BT Business product, its not free.
-
BT Sport is doomed
I think we all know if that was really the case, Sky wouldn't be playing silly buggers ;)
-

I get those free this year! :D :D :y :y
Mind you I will not be watching them! ;D ;D ;D ;)

What will be key i think is next round of bidding for rights

You, as a BT broadband customer, get them for free forever (as currently envisaged), for SD. Its only HD that you get for free for one year only.

If Sky and BT have any sense, they will get their acts together and cooperate, else the only winner (for football) will be the FA. The last set of real premiership bidding hit Sky hard financially, and killed ONDigital.
However, given the way Sky have refused to cooperate, I can't see that happening.
I reckon we'll see BT honing what they want, as they are new to this.
-
I'm just glad I don't care for watching a bunch of mouth-breathers chasing after an inflated pig's bladder. ;)
As far as I'm concerned, they can both get rooted. :P

I feel exactly the same way.
And as I refuse to buy Sky, and can't get BT Sport (my BT Infinity is a business product), I really couldn't give a monkeys ;D
-
Biggest problem BT have is just 36 football premiership games, no other big sports. May stop a few leaving, but cannot see vast numbers leaving for BT for a lot less sport and value added products.
-
I'm same as Albitz here.We currently watch MotoGP on Eurosport which we'll lose at the end of this season, but there's absolutely no way I'm going to BT for anything. As for football I will not allow it on TV no matter who the service provider is.
-
So...is the subscription just for the actual premiership games? I'm watching Man City v Bayern Munich now.

Whaat about Scunnie?????? Fantastic team.
-
Scunny usually strongest team in their division, but then they have to be as they're usually propping the rest up!!!

You reckon?
£43.50 for Sky Sports, which may include free (but very limited) broadband if you're lucky enough to live in LLU area.
£15 for BT Sports, including (supposedly) truely unlimited broadband nationwide. Or you can add Sky Sports as well, and still end up way less that the Sky price.
At a time when the vast majority are seeing a real-term reduction in income.
The 38 (not 36 - you're not the first from Sky to say that) are the exclusive ones, which aren't on Sky. There are others that are shared not just with Sky, but beeb and ITV.
Personally, I couldn't give a monkeys about either Sky or BT Sport, as MOTD highlights are too much pain when being a Villa fan ;D ;D ;D. However, I suspect Uncle Rupert is whipping his yes men onto social media and forums, arming them with mis information. Although I do not work for BT, I happen to work in a BT office that has one of the BT call centres, and it is quite enlightening :-X

BT Sport is free an anyone tonight, as part of the launch.

Ch57 I think - the one labelled as BT Sport, not BT Sport1 or BT Sport2 which are scambled.
Not sure when the freebie bit is being turned off.

Don't have those that anywhere near here anyway.

There is a lot of confusion on this thread and maybe we should just consider what is a baseline cost.
In the house up north we have orange broadband - about 6 Mbps speed and land line for £19 a month roughly £14 for the landline and £5 for the broadband. The router is connected to a smart tv which cost £199 from Sainsbury (celcus or something). Obviously calls on top but is this what we would agree is the baseline (or similar deals).?
-
Just spec'd up Full Fibre (76mb) with BT, getting their free Sports and FreeView pack, with phone (no calling packs) comes in at £40.45. That's very similar to Sky, except Sky force an entertainment pack on you, compared to BT giving freeview.
Not bad, that is almost exactly what I pay Virgin for 30MB Cable internet, "medium" TV pack which has some Music and extra stuff on top of free-view, but clearly no Sports.
Could be tempted at my hopeful new place to go for BT rather than Virgin, although need to see what Ariel is like.

I remember TB when Sky promised so much "Free" within the initial subscription price (then £10 per month back in the 1980s) and quickly added "extra" sport, like big boxing and special football games for an additional fee! I suspect BT will do the same. ::) ::) ::) ;)

Are you sure about that Tunnie?
An Open Reach BT engineer who recently upgraded my service to Infinity said the fibre optic lines were only to the "box in the street", and the old lines into my property would remain to handle Infinity. He then went on to state that only very large commercial concerns had full fibre optic lines right into their premises as it "cost £20,000 to install those lines" :o :o :o
I stopped then pushing the engineer to run fibre optic cable into my flat!! ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;)

Yes, Plenty of residential properties can have FTTP (Fibre to the Premesis), rather than FTTC (Fibre to the Cab), little dearer, and faster (300meg down, 20 up).
(£26 gets you 76 meg down
£35 gets you 160 meg down
£50 gets you the full 300!)
Father in law, 200 meters or so away can have FTTP, we can 'only' get FTTC
-
Well thats on their retail customer based website, that's the price they quoted for that speed.
Course that does depend on how far from the box you are, also who else down your road is using the internet.
-
The broadband package you quoted is for a (almost) genuinely unlimited FTTC package,
LZ - I suspect the SD versions will remain free for the foreseeable future. The HD ones I reckon will be the premium option, and are now chargable (although free for first year if you signed up before 31st July).
-
Took up BT Sport (& BT vision) last week. Box arrived Friday and tonight I enjoyed live Indycar racing from Mid-Ohio. Good buy, methinks.
BTW Excellent first win for Charlie Kimball, a 28-year old Type 1 diabetic. :y :y
-
Can't really comment on what has been said, but we retuned the freeview TV at the caravan (Static) today and came up with BTSport, + 1 and 2 and had sport on all this afternoon, and that's all free, will retune our freesat when we get home and see what is on there, not bothered at all but it is there for free so thought worth a mention..... :y :y

Free in sd TB said iirc.
Ppv in hd btw.

Only free to BT Broadband punters. I think they are scambling some stuff but not others, technically its still in its launch party.
*NOT* PPV for HD, but is subscription. I don't think the capability is there for PPV yet.

Yes but I don't know of an acronym/abbreviation for "subscription". ;)

I was thinking of this which is not F1:
"BT Sport have secured exclusive rights to the MotoGP World Championship, along with feeder series’ Moto2 and Moto3, it has been announced. The announcement ends BBC’s ten year association covering the championship, and British Eurosport’s coverage. BT Sport’s deal will cover 2014 through to and including 2018, the broadcaster covering every session of the championships.
The acquisition of MotoGP by BT means that they join Eurosport and Sky Sports in having covered the series. Sky Sports were involved in MotoGP (then 500cc) in the early 1990′s, with Keith Huewen and Julian Ryder commentating. Martin Turner, now Sky Sports F1 executive producer, was producing the programs. When Sky chose to focus on the Superbike World Championship, Eurosport picked up coverage of the 125cc, 250cc and 500cc series. Since 2003, BBC have covered MotoGP live alongside Eurosport, BBC taking over from Sunset+Vine’s Channel 5 coverage which was presented by Steve Scott. BBC’s rights to screen the MotoGP race became exclusive from the beginning of 2009 when Dorna opted to axe British Eurosport’s coverage. Amusingly, that press release contained the words: “The decision is part of Dorna´s new strategy of working with national network broadcasters around Europe, always focusing first and foremost on free-to-air coverage to bring MotoGP to wider audiences.” Unfortunately for fans across the United Kingdom, Dorna’s deal with BT Sport goes completely against that grain. As it turned out, the decision to axe British Eurosport’s coverage was overturned in February 2009, with sessions being broadcast live and the MotoGP race being shown on a tape delay.
The announcement of BT Sport’s coverage notes how viewers will be able to “see races from the riders’ perspective and with more interactive features showing off the most technologically advanced bikes, giving UK fans a whole new MotoGP viewing experience, immersing them in every aspect of the Championship”. This puts the coverage alongside Sky Sports’ F1 coverage and BBC’s F1 coverage which has a similar set-up behind their respective interactive services. Manel Arroyo, Dorna Sports, Managing Director, said: “We’re proud that MotoGP will be part of such a huge and exciting project as BT Sport.” Simon Green, Head of BT Sport, added: “The agreement with MotoGP is really exciting. We want BT Sport to offer a wide range of sports that appeal to many different audiences and MotoGP is a thrilling sport with a massive and committed fan base in the UK and Ireland.”
-
That an base will shrink dramatically at the end of this year when free to view, viewing finishes. They are shooting themselves in both feet with this move imo.
-
just signed up for it :)
get ESPN as well and as we don't really watch footy but we can get all the rugby we want 8) 8) 8)
