Now is a great time, if you are out of contract to get some serious discounts from sky.
I've just spent the best part of the evening on the phone and have reduced my monthly payment from £76.25 to £40.72 AND I will shortly receive a new Sky+ HD box for the bedroom AND full-fat Fibre Broadband.
BT is really ruffling those Sky feathers! :y

That is the Sky TV package, Copper BB (I can see the exchange from my house) and Telephone with Evening and Weekend calls.
To be honest, I wasn't pushing for Fibre as my copper connection is excellent. But, if it comes for free, I'll 'ave it.

Interesting.
As always in life, the object of the exercise is to get what you want as cheaply as possible. IMO.
I shall be looking into this smartish. Thanks BM. :)

Tunnie , where's my free wireless thingy for the tv ::) ;D It pays to shop around , even Virgin are trying to get in on the act :)

Exactly - I've always been very pleased with what I got from Sky.... especially the Discovery channels and others which are unavailable on BT. ESPN has (since last night) been shut down on Virgin...... HD is a big thing for me to, especially with films and music channels. My surround system utilises the HD signal and makes everything much better.
Sky may charge what some people would call "a lot", but I wouldn't be without it.

Indeed. Its a first class service IMO. ...I fear I may be drawn by a cheaper similar service, then find the box software is slow, flakey, crashey etc.
Sky boxes need improving IMO, but I have yet to encounter a pvr /set top box that's better.
Is there better...?

Sky box production is now in-house, the latest generation are lot better.
-
How long has it been 'in-house' Tunnie? The new box we got in November is one of those 'reduced volume' thingys. Old box volume at 30 blew us out of the room. New box volume at 70 to be heard comfortably.... :(
-
It's been house for some time now, but took them time to design and build new boxes. November probably is a new on, they are considerably smaller in size compared to the old HD ones.
-
(I can see the exchange from my house)
How far? If too close, you won't be able to get fibre ;)

Is there better...?
Pre Windows 8 Media Center (complete with yankee spelling) ;)
Fast, versatile and configurable. Oh, and your entire HDD is yours ;D. The key the MCE is not let it be pissed around with by people who's IT ego doesn't match their IT capability (ie, if you install mega-spasmo-deluxe-codec-packs, you will shag it)

But in a few years all that will be built into our telly (when our current non smart is replaced) surely?

Like to think so, but can you imagine the likes of Sony having such open systems built in to their consumer electronics? I would expect them to go down the line of more proprietry, locked-in method, that allow force upselling...
The current Smart technologies built in to tellys are currently little more than gimmicks, with perhaps the only useful feature being a (clunky on most) iPlayer.
-
I'm rather interested in Chromecast, think that will work really well. Browse content on your mobile device, then press a button, bam. On the big TV

Don't they like the open DLNA protocol?
*Sigh*, and people think MS were naughty...
-
Been very impressed with the Smart options on our Samsung TV.
Iplayer works brillianty, the other catchups work ok.
DLNA very good, once you have a decent server, Serviio works well for standard DLNA, Plex works well with its app store free client.
Not used much more than that, dont need to with PC's and phones.....
so not really used the browser type apps etc

Actually, you say that, but when we're arranging holibobs with friends, we tend to gather in the lounge, and have browsers up on the big screen... ...usually at Abbo's place, as his is 110", which puts my poxy 40" to shame, ohhh-errr missus.
So it is handy to have a proper browser occasionally... ...but if MCE-less, for these occasions, nothing wrong with plugging in a lappy to the telly (or DLNAing if you have the technology)
-
110" :o
Bladdy hell! do they come round with Kia Ora & Ice Cream at half time too :D ;D ;)

I can't justify a media centre with no disc player... Or are we effectively talking xbox1?
I'm also wondering if smart/all built in tv's will be obsolete if xbox1 or ps4 do it all. Seems more likely perhaps?
In which case, I only need a monitor. Which is all my current tv is. 3hdmi inputs and one composite. No sound capability at all. Although I'm ignoring 3d capability.

Can't imagine anyone thinking a (what I would call) media center without an optical drive. Except maybe tunnie, on the grounds of tightness, but he's very special. An optical drive is about £15 delivered for DVD, and just over double for gayray.
Despite having my music collection, and a small part of my film collection (the ones we watch annually - Die Hard/Terminator/LOTR/Ironman (mainly for Miss Paltrow ::)) etc - available on the network, I still like to get out (esp) CDs and DVDs.
I think the idea behind smart tv is that you don't need a seperate box. However, until smart tv is more of an open standard, it will always lag behind.

So all things considered, including cost, which is best? Xbox1 or media centre?
Not for you, mind. For me. :)

All I know about the SexBox One is from the channel bumf I get sent. So I cannot answer that yet.
