Just been watching ITV4 coverage of the Finnish rally. Nice to see them using that unpronouncable high speed stage with all the yumps. 160 in 33Km. (Ouninpohja.)
Anyway it got me thinking that technology has moved on. Better brakes, tyres and suspension for example but how do todays cars stack up on stage times compared to the 4 wheel drive Audi Quattros and the like.? Anyone know or have a view?
-
Hi Varche.
I believe the times are going to be very different. I base that view on the Audi Quatro vs ford focus (I think it was a focus) they did on top gear. they were basically saying how ''reasonably priced'' hatches nowadays give about the same performance iirc.
cant give you stage time differences though, soz

The old Group B cars had (over) twice as much power as the modern WRC cars, but from what I've read their (WRC cars) stage times are meant to be faster..
..now if I could just find numbers to back that up..

Yep...The 6R4 Metro of the eighties had over 400 BHP.......The Audi Quattro and Lancia far more.

I'm not sure about that, Aaron.......but if true it would make interesting reading. :y

Modern tyres/suspension/brakes etc. will have more than made up for the loss of bhp I would imagine. I would still prefer to see a Chevette HS or similar completely sideways, being steered on the throttle at 80mph though.

The late great Henri Toivonen perhaps? I still get goose bumps remembering his driving skill. On one RAC rally in the early 80's, he was the only lead driver that didn't lift on Wykeham 2 in dense fog. Respect.
-
He was a hugely gifted driver, although I well remember him letting slip on camera that he had a problem with his pace notes on the RAC,when pace notes were banned,so that may have partly explained why he was so much quicker than everyone else. ;)
Favourite Chevette driver was probably Tony Pond.Blindingly fast and fearless. :y

You remind me that I often see a bog standard but absolutely mint condition Shoveit being driven around here - it always makes me think of this place, and specifically those of you with a hankering for the past ;)
