Phones very personal, upgrade to the one that you like  :y

You well get Apple only people and Android only, each saying theirs is best, but it's all down to what works for you  :)

Nokia went seriously down hill in the Symbian days, they had to do the tie up with Microsoft or they would have dead in the water.

Their latest Windows based handsets are quite impressive, but lack apps due to the poor market share they have.

as said before, try before you buy. there are now so many different handsets offering android, ios, windows, et al. I did my research and settled on the htc one, basically because of its aluminium chassis and its ability to take minor knocks. the manufacturer that seems to be worth watching is Huawei, as they have developed the worlds thinnest handset I believe, also they have making branded handsets for others for sometime !

I've recently upgraded to a Sony Xperia T and I'm very impressed so far! :y

Mind you my last phone was steam driven so I guess I'd have been impressed if it was clockwork!!  ;D

I have the Lumia 920 which is a great phone but Nokia/ Microsoft have ignored thousands of ex Symbian users who had flawless compatability before with in built car phone systems and have not sorted out the problem. It works well with basic parrot 3100 in my Omega but does not work in Insignia or Phaeton. I won't go into detail but be sure to check if it works in your car

My nokia lumina pairs with,my parrot.,but it wouldn't pair with mt nokia ck5 etc, turned out microsoft now tell nokia what they can and cant do,there's lots of things that you cant do with these microsoft nokias, send/receive  files, photos etc via bluetooth,.
Still non the wiser, need to go and play in the shop.

Not entirely correct. There will be some restrictions that the OS provider states, mainly around phone security and to provide consistency, but carkit compatibility will be firmly in the hands of the handset supplier.

Absolutely, but the sales ppl get upset if you let on that you're just there for a play  :-X

I've recently been fairly impressed by the Sony Xperia range. Android - which I prefer. And a range of costs accrording to the suffix letter E or J or T or X or whatever. I recently got an Xperia J for son at an O2 shop for £120, which I thought was ok.

However be careful of reading online reviews, I found that the people who write these tend to be real geeks for whom only the vary latest and most expensive with the most features etc will do, and everything else is crap. My only hard and fast rule for ME personally is I stay away from iPhones or anything elses starting with an "i". I just refuse to be forced into joining their "club"   8)

If only Nokia had realised what they had by inventing the Smartphone, they might have got off their arse and designed their own operating system.... instead of paying Symbian no money at all for theirs, and didn't it show.

Nokia should be the world leader in the mobile phone market now as well as back then.  Idiots!

Of course, if its just to make or receive calls, those cheapo, dumb Nokias for £20 are unbeatable :y

Symbian was theirs in the early days ;)

And to be honest, they didn't really invent the smartphone, as the Nokia Communicator was far from smart, being a standard HP PDA using the modem in the Nokia phone. Although the definition of Smartphone is blurred - for most its a mobile phone running an OS with an openly published interfaces for 3rd parties to develop software to run on it.

Windows, Gooseberry, and possibly to a lesser extent Ericsson were the first with proper smartphones, although Gooseberry shied away from touchscreens for years, making it, basically, crap as a smartphone.

Windows ruled the roost of early Smartphones, until crApple came along and Andriod properly took off (Apple were the ones that inspired the majority to have more than just a phone).

Ah I see TB has his pedantic hat on. ::)
The communicator absolutely was not their first smartphone.

Definition of which being, the ability to open numerous pages, or applications, or whatever, at the same time and be able to move between them at will. Aka nokias series 60 phones.

Nokias series 40 phones where not capable of this, and had the traditional one page at a time menu system most people know of a mobile phone. Utterly reliable, massive battery life, but totally basic and very annoying in the early days if you wanted to do more than one thing at a time, like check the calendar while righting a text. Hence series 60 was born.

The first ever smartphone was the Nokia 7650. I know, as I had one. Nothing similar was available at the time. And it was HUGE ;D

Also, I don't think a touch screen is the best idea, but to get the functions and capability of a modern day device, it has to be suffered unfortunately.

Ps, the communicator did have some features that later became part of the Smartphones feature. But it wasn't "smart" initially. :)

No personal experience of the Nokia. But it has a removable battery. And going by this, no forward facing camera for video calling, or its an over sight.

I think you're buggered either way Rog!  ::)

With Android you have to sign up to Google Play who probably now know more about me in the 2 months since I succumbed than my Mother ever has!!  :o  :-\

The battery life on my Lumia 920 is erratic. It is a good job I have one of those wireless charging thingies on my desk at work.

Battery is not removeable. It has been very reliable and does everything I need plus a very good quality camera. The 4G works well - it is a quick phone.
