I should have said we had a deal where we had 3D movies included but we were told it would be more on top  :y Yes Freeview will do fine and HD on a lot of channels ...not that it makes any difference with my eyes  ::) ;D ;D

Likewise. Never had, & never had the need for Sky .............. the price you can pay per month is all the justification we need.  ;)

A few years ago, we needed a new TV Receiver & Recorder...
Digital was there, but a bit crap in our area where we picked up Welsh and English TV.

'Bought' Sky as a put us on solution for while switchover happened, and technology matured as there was so much going on.

Our old TV packed up a couple of months ago, So replaced it with a Samsung Smart TV, with freeview and freesat built in.
Cancelled Sky,
TV can record onto a USB HDD plugged in the back, but generally we record nothing now and watch anything we need to on catchup, or download and stream the odd series we want on DLNA.

Dont miss sky, and havent looked back.  It did however suit our needs perfectly for few years, Only ever had the entertainment type packs at £23ish a month.

Freeview here too, happy enough but miss the Cricket and live F1. I will not pay for things I don't want it's only TV after all  :y

HD seems to make no difference either except the volume is lower ???

Must admit we are going to be cancelling our subscription in the next few days and its going to be a very sad day in the healey household.

I know it's not cheap but we really do use it. My missus loves the sky one, Atlantic and living (amongst others) whereas I love the documentary channels and the sport and movies, especially seeing how it looks like Watford might be spending a bit of time on ss1 this season! Plus with a 5&6 yr old there's always something on (or on catchup)

I know it's fashionable to knock sky and the Murdoch empire but we have had a sterling service from them in the many years we've used them.

But needs must and I suppose putting food in our mouths is more important nowadays!!

A bad time to enter the thread after Magic's post.... but.

Just plugged in my new (free) 2TB Sky-Box and will be enjoying Sky for a further 12months.

Despite how good FreeView has become, I am damn sure I couldn't happily watch TV without a gazillion of channels of shit to watch!  ;D

Squealey, with the roll-out of BT Vision, Sky are currently offering fellatio to keep you as a customer!  :y

I think there's plenty of crap on Freeview to watch, without paying Sky for more!  ::) Never have and never will!!  :)

In fact I havn't had a telly for over 12 months now and just watch stuff I want to on the catch up services!  :)  It's quite liberating really and of course no TV tax licence!!!  :y

AFAIK, if you have a television aerial, you need to pay for a license nowadays.  Something to do with being 'able' to receive a broadcast?  :-\

We have had this 'debate' before, iirc you do need a licence, regardless of how you receive a tv broadcast, otherwise we would all get rid of our TV's and use a computer and perhaps a projector...... ;) ;)

I think that if you had a TV or recorder hooked up to a dish or aerial when the TV licence people come calling then be prepared to do some fast talking as I don't think that claims that you only watch catch up would cut much ice!  :-\

Although there is a dish and an aerial on my house, I do not have a TV or recorder, only a laptop and smartphone. Now the thing is, I can watch live TV on both, but whose job is it to prove that I've been watching live TV?  ::)  Innocent until proven guilty M'Lud!!  :)

And that is the truth for the OOF-Jury!  :y

We have covered this before on various threads, and all I can add is the official statement on the TV Licencing web site:

"Technology - devices and online

With today’s technology, you can watch TV on more devices than ever, whenever it suits you best. This means a TV Licence doesn’t just cover you to watch TV at home on a TV set. You can also watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV, through all of these devices:
Computers, including laptops and tablets
Mobile phones
Games consoles
Digital boxes, e.g. Freeview, Sky, Virgin, BT Vision
DVD/VHS/Blu-ray recorders.
As long as the address where you live is licensed, you’re also covered to watch TV outside your home using any device powered solely by its own internal batteries. This includes your mobile phone, laptop and tablet.
Exception: If you only watch catch-up services online, then you don’t need a licence. For example, you don’t need one to use BBC iPlayer, or ITV player, to catch up on programmes after they have been shown on TV."

Well had a letter through from sky that they were putting up the prices £10 a month  :

Right, sorry for delay in replying. £10 a month, to me it sounds like you've signed up to something without realising it? Lets assume your bill is £50/m that is a 20% price increase, Sky are not that foolish.

You recently said you applied for an on-demand router, are you sure you've not added Moves,Sports ect? What exactly does this letter say?

when i tried to get the films they didnt come up so rang sky and they said oh you got to pay extra for that  ::)

If you get films on your standard TV setup, you will get moves through on-demand/xbox/mobile devices free. There are no extra charges for on-demand content, it should match your standard subscription. If you have been told different, its wrong.

Worth pointing out that Sky's call centres are often out-sourced, results can be varied.

If you cannot see any improved with HD, you are either getting 720p not full 1080p HD. Also you could have a shite TV which is not actually giving HD image. Finally you may just have shite eye-sight, if so, get an updated pair of glasses!

HD is vastly better, you can easily see this on NewsHD channels as they can display significantly more detail. In comparison to me, SD looks very blury!

But surely people could just say that they only watch catch up TV to the tv licence people and still watch TV and not pay for TV licensing  ??? .. Confusing  :D

TV License is there to watch a program live, as it stands if you can prove (very hard to do so) that you only watch programs as VOD (after broadcast), you don't need a TV License.

Sky still in 720p, was referring to HD in general  :y Still noticeable difference in HD, best comparison is Sky News.

1080p is on the horizon though, thought I suspect for VOD to start with :)

The benefit of HD depends if you're pixel peeping 6" from the TV, you're Mister. "my wall is my TV" (mentioning no names) or sitting in a sofa in a normal living room, a normal distance from a normal sized TV. In the latter scenario, broadcast quality HD makes only a very marginal difference, IMHO, although stepping up to blue ray quality HD does.

Also.. A lot of material broadcast on HD channels is upconverted SD or "not particularly" HD at source IME.

No point having the higher def rates on a small tv. Non at all.

But then, who has a small tv these days? They're not interested in more than 720p if they have HD at all.

Having said that, heald at the right distance from the viewer, an ipad mini can be "bigger" than an 80" plasma. It all helps, if you sit the appropriate distance from your particular tv to see it. ;)

You recently said you applied for an on-demand router, are you sure you've not added Moves,Sports ect? What exactly does this letter say?

All it says is as from next month your sky bill will increase another £10 per month , we have the same package and have not changed or added anything tunnie  :(

Just got the on demand box working properly which is excellent  :y

Sorry missed this post some how, I'd ring up and complain.

Ask why it has gone up £10, the exact reason  :y

If nothing specific is given, ask to cancel and be prepared to go through with it.  :)
