IIRC you pull the switch back to flash the lights or push it forward to stay on main beam.

It does read as though the switch is NFG but I would check fuses before condemning the switch.

New ones are not very expensive (I have never bought one so not sure how much exactly). Lots of cars being broken for spares by members on here so the cheapest way to get a replacement would be to drop a wanted ad in the 'test' section and ask a mod to move it to the parts section.

the fuses are all ok there are two one for each side and the relay seems to be working you can hear it clicking so will check for a switch thanks for the advice

Worth pulling the relay and checking it is working.

Also, worth checking the obvious (that both bulbs are OK)

Just because you can hear the coil energising, that doesn't automatically mean the contacts are good.
Based on your description that you can sometimes get the main beams to "flash" when you pull on the indicator stalk, that would lead me to suspect the switch itself.

Ah, yes, missed that bit  :-[

Switch does seem most likely, but test the relay first before condemming the indicator stalk.
