Post by: omega3000 on 19 August 2013, 20:16:47
Hi all , ive put the top coat of paint and applied the lacquer to my boot spoiler but what im asking is do i need to do anything else  :-\ Maybe ive read it wrong but have seen you can lightly sand the lacquer and mop/polish it  :-\

Oh and how long should i leave the lacquer to harden before i can handle it  :y

Emd, generally car paints after factory are left untouched with its original orange peel surface..  at least thats true for us mortals that can/cant buy "normal" cheap  unused cars..

however, some paint shops use this technique as they wish to make their final finish to look more classy (orange peel removed) and clean and shiny ..

but there are some risks involved, for small parts with sharp corners its not improtant how many thick n layers you spray the paint and final laquer in those corners cant stay and leave a very tiny layer..  so during sanding and polishing you can easily remove this tiny layer and face with bare surface..  so I recommend you sand only the flat areas if there is any dust sticking.. and before that mask the sharp corners with 2-3 layers of masking tape :y

laquer driyng period depends on the environment temperature and the waiting times between application layers .. but if its not urgent 2 weeks will be more than enough ;D ;D

ps: actual drying times are few hours under proper conditions but still it can be wet inside and during sanding and polishing it can easily stick to your working material :-\

Its had 3 coats of lacquer cem  :y Im not sure to sand the lacquer as i could mess it all up , no dust is on the surface and its looking quite good . Maybe a good wash and wax will be enough .

Oh how long to leave the lacquer to harden  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\  :y

Ps... i have locked the cats out of the spray booth  ;D

if you ask my opinion, if there is no dust dont sand.. and for polishing, if you polish it now it will harden very late (polishes effect hardening as you can guess)..  wait minimum 2 weeks or even more to polish.. :y

ps: the surface will become a bit dull when its properly dried..

As Cem says see how it looks in 2 weeks time, if looks like a matt finish I would be inclined to cut back with compound rather the wet and dry then finnish off with a mild T Cut leave for a few more days then wash and polish. Also as Cem says watch those corners even when cutting back. :y

I tend to flat and polish a couple of hours after final lacquer coat, and I hit the lacquer layers heavy for a good deep shine and robust protective finish.

This doesn't apply to 2k paint, though!

whatever is type of paint , few microns deeper down the surface hardening still not complete after a couple of hours.. if you polish it hardening will be delayed..

did I mention that some painters use less hardener than required, to sand+polish orange peel easily ;D :D

and it never dries properly :P

and you can scratch the paint even with your finger tips >:(  (flesh not nails)
