Had a problem gear change with passengers in car. Which I thought indicates ATF needs topping up.
Jacked car off ground as level as possible, left engine running and warm, undid the level plug, nothing coming out so filled with 3/4 litres of Dex3 as that is the limit due to physical impossibility to lift bottle further.
All fine but not tested with passengers since. Had MOT this morning and they let me use the pit to top up further. Armed with another new bottle of ATF, I had engine running, undid level plug, nothing coming out, so proceeded filling. Got a 1/4 litre in and suddenly, WOOOOOSH, it started pushing the ATF out. Got finger in the hole and refitted nut and washer while it was coming out. Drove home fine.
Question is. Why did it suddenly woooosh out, as if I'd unblocked a drain?
Not sure how much ATF I lost but it was still coming out when I refitted the nut.

When I do mine I top up as you describe and then run it through all gears and recheck/top up as required so as to eliminate possibility of airlocks. Possible an airlock which then burped out excess fluid?

Someone else said air lock. Makes sense, thanks.
