Title: 2.5 v6 mis fire
Post by: Busker75 on 01 September 2013, 19:35:30
Hi all i have a 2000 2.5 v6 auto 85k. it was running purring like a kitten until i noticed an intermittent misfire usually as when i needed power i.e. up hill or on a slip road etc. If i booted it at this stage power would then kick in and the thing vertually took off like a rocket! It would then be fine for the next day. Any way it got worse untill it was it was misfiring constantley accept onot under load. After doing much research i pointed the problem down to the dis pack and so changed it for a new one put it all back together and excitedly turned the keys only to find it was worse even on tickover!! i also noticed i arcing or ticking sound coming from the coil pack. After assuming the new one was faulty i decided to put the old one back on which incidently looked like new no splits or rust etc. turned the keys again and running the same as before!!! i have cleared all the oil out the wells as and put new plugs in still the same!!! i made sure all was connected up in the right order etc. i have done a paper clip test and comes up 57 which is the engine idle valve but doubt this could be the answer..could it?? also i have read it could be the engine coolant temp sensor??   what ever i have done i have made the matter worse and everything was connected up properly. i am aware that the rocker gasket is on its way out but i can do that another time just want to sort this out first. can any one help?

IF  ... you had sufficient oil in the plug wells that you needed to "clear it out" there is a strong possibility that you have damaged the part of the coil pack that connects to the plug. They don't take well to being submerged in boiling oil !!  (bit like me I guess :) )

When you say "changed for a new one" .. do you mean

a) Genuine GM brand new
b) brand new pattern part
c) new to you but actually pre-used (posh name for second hand !!)

?? :)

No point in doing anything until you replace cam cover gaskets and clean out the breather system and stop oil leaking into plug wells.  Agree with Entwood, you may need to replace plug lead(s) ;)

The new one is new but is a cheaper after market one I picked up of eBay. I do have some new leads coming hopefully tomorrow. I suppose I am eger to put myself out of misery just know it was the leads. I will order a cam gasket ASAP!! Does the intake manifold have to be removed in order to cam tops off??

Ok chaps I will get this done while am at it. Anything I should know regarding de pressurising the fuel system, any risk of air getting in when its all put back together will it start up ok.? When you say clean out the breathers what exactly do you mean as my machanical terminology is somewhat limited!! Lol

Remove fuse 18 while engine running - when it stalls switch off - remember to put fuse 18 back in ;)

Cleaning breathers - there's a howto in Maintenance Guides :y

Hi well leads tirned up so fitted ...still running dog rough
!!!! So I took off new coil pack and put the old one back on. Turned key and made a right clanking noise at first now seems ok. Took her out put some petrol in all seems ok. There seems to be a slight popping noise though could it be the new plugs and what do suppose the clank noise was when I first cranked her up. Its not there now drives ok although maybe a bit more gruntier and growels louuder lol. Slight air leak from back of plenum on yhe 2 middle pipes I will get some juberly clips tomorrow. Neary there ???
