Title: Camshaft Removal
Post by: Webby the Bear on 03 September 2013, 09:15:36
Hi guys,

Once i've got car free of cam covers and timing belt off etc whats the procedure for removing the camshafts IF i cant get the sprockets undone?

i remember on Ralf they were un-removable as they must have been out before as the heads of the torx bolts were stripped, thus making it impossible to get them out.

Thanks.

Don't see why you would need to remove the sprockets  :-\ After the belt is off, undo all the bolts on the cam caps (keeping the caps in the correct order is very important) then just withdraw the cams from the heads.

Thats exactly what i did on Ralf mate...... but i was concerned that would i ruin the canshaft oil seal thingy? or would it simply withdraw from the rear cam cover as i did with ralf?

cheers for the response mate  :y :y

Remember, engine in "safe" position (60 degrees BTDC on a V6) before playing with camshafts.

 ;D ;D ;D sorry boyo.

what i meant was this.....

you know the camshaft sprocket.... well behind that its connected to the rear timing belt cover. thats why they say to take the sprockets off.

BUT.

I'm thinking that you undo the cam shaft shells..... then pull the camshaft including sprocket forward.

is this correct?.....or have i lost you again  ;D ;D

cheers mate. are there bolts securing it in or will it just pull out> if there are bolts i should be able to get to them through the holes in the sprocket, right?  :-\

I reckon you will get them out ok but theres no way you can re-fit them and get the oils seals seated properly without getting the pulleys off :-\

youre probably right mate... it certainly doesn't mention in any guide that you can remove and refit without taking the sprockets off.... lucky I got a 1/2" T55 socket for my breaker bar.  ::) :y

Post by: Andy H on 03 September 2013, 20:11:07
IIRC Haynes lists them as being stretch bolts that should be replaced every time the sprockets are taken off (not that anyone I know has done so ::))

I would drill through the bolt heads to remove them and fit new ones on assembly (if I was feeling really brave I would use some second hand ones..........)

Each sprocket has numbers on it, make sure that number on the sprocket corresponds to the keyway on the relevant camshaft, eg far drivers side number one, and so on. 246 bank sprockets have a longer shaft on them :y

you know when you've taken the sprockets off.... do you mean that where it says ''1'' for example that goes closest to the little shiny metal notch sticking out of the cam seal? sorry for being thick  :-[

Lets take drivers side exhaust cam for argument sake. This is no1. Where it says 1 on the pulley, fit the pulley so that the key (bit that sticks out the front if the camshaft) goes in the notch on the pulley closest to where the no1 is stamped.

Typing on my iPhone , does that make sense?

Exhaust fanimold gaskets, I'd use the later type GM ones. The dowty washers on coolant bridge, I'd use GM.  HG, a seller called trechi (or something like that) on egay supplied my pattern ones, but I recall someone saying their head bolts were cheese. Cam cover gaskets, if not reusable, GM of course. Most of the inlet gaskets should be reusable.

Might be worth resealing oil cooler plate whilst there.

bit of fine emery on here. should I also be getting a straight edge and feeler blades on to the surface to look for dents? I was thinking to definitely confirm the pistons are fine I heard I can put oil in all the cylinders... and it should sit there... if it doesn't that cylinder and piston is fekked. is that right?

I just want to make doubly sure its all good you know  :y :y :y

Ah, yes, cam seals. Pattern ones are usually shite. To the point when my heads were ripped off at 130k, the original seals were used, and still going strong at 209k.  This was on advice from Master.

Has your thermostat been off recently Webby, as it can be quite challenging to separate the transfer pipe from the stat housing if you haven't. New pipe is about eleven quid and it means you can then show it no mercy.  ;D

They apparentl only do the kit (including hg, exh. fannymould gasket, stem seals (not needed) and cam seals)........£184............................PER BANK  :o

Stretch bolts 0.75 each so will order them with CC gasket kit and stat pipe o rings.

Elring hg's at about £10 a pop. Likewise for exhaust manifold, pattern are ok but these must be multi layer steel. You don't need a kit :y
