Title: Swopping an engine?
Post by: viper357 on 04 September 2013, 08:53:15
Is it possible? I have a 2001 Elite 3.2, auto, petrol.

Is it possible to put a different engine in? Diesel perhaps? Or even a smaller one, like a 2.5 or a 2.2 or something? And what sort of cost is involved? I really like the car but I'm contemplating if it's worthwhile trying to do something like this or just sell the car, as the fuel consumption is killing me, I do mostly school runs every day so the car is just not suitable. If I can get a smaller motor put in for a reasonable cost then I would keep the car.

Better off LPG'ing it, that reduces fuel costs around 40%

My 2.2 gets around 25mpg on gas, but as I can fill up for 64p litre it's dirt cheap to run.

Just remember even a small cost such as £700 can take around 10,000 miles to pay back.

So if you only do school runs, a small outlay in cash can take years to pay back  :y

For short school runs you ideally require a small shitbox sized petrol. Anything big (car or engine) will kill you of fuel

Not the solution here I'm afraid

On a run my 2.2CD manual will do approx. 31mpg (heavy right foot it down to Dorset)....around town 20mpg at the best!
(In this stupid town you are lucky to get out of 3rd!)
For short school runs, why not get a little car as suggested, loads around at reasonable prices (the wifes cost  under £200 for a 1.1 pug on a Y),lovely little motor for running around and cheap as anything to run/service, something a bit bigger(4 door) a Picasso again they are cheap and chuck away's :y (mine was £300 and have had it a year and it is used like a transit van ;D
Save the big 'un for long journey's in comfort that's what we do....well mostly ;)
