Just added a little more to Matts fund

Good luck mate :y

Thanks Dad. :y

Thank you everyone for your support. The bike is racked, the transition bags are in place and ready, the wetsuit and vaseline (ooo-err) are prepared for the morning, I just have to bring it and smash it. It truly heartens me to get the support from people off here including those I have not even met face to face :y
I drove the bike course today......ouch! The supposed heartbreak hill looks easy compared to other climbs, especially coming out of Saundersfoot and Wiseman's Bridge (half a mile of 17% incline!)
There is a tracker you can use throughout the day which will show you the times I post when I go over the timing mats. My race number is 756:

I am not sure how often it is updated........
You can still support Guffers in his charity :y :y

Yep! Why run & cycle all that way when you've a perfectly good car? ;) ;) ;) ;)

Or at least something with wheels. I can understand the push bike stage.... Just.
I once had the crazy notion of doing the coast to coast cycle ride. North coast from Workington, to the west coast near Newcastle somewhere.
Can't see that happening now. ;D
But this is something else altogether. Amazing what people are capable of though. :y

Newcastle is on the west coast? You really are a tit, aren't you? ::)

Don't sugar coat it STEMO ;D ;D ;D
He might not know his west from his east, but he's brilliant at rear do-nut bushes :y :y :y

East to West coast then, I'm more interested in watching Prometheus, now bog off. Pedant ;D
I wasn't very good at you donuts Mr B.... had to dig them out with a stick. :o

If my Omega is stopping on my drive, I need to do something with the front wishbone bushes. When you have something else to compare it to (as lard arse as the Merc is), you realise that it does its own thing in corners & only vaguely follows the input from the steering wheel ..... I really must use it more.

Still no time posted for the 14km way point ....... I think Matt has stopped for a pint! ::)

I really can't imagine how gruelling that would be. It seems almost impossible....

It IS impossible for me! In 'English', he's swum almost 2.5 miles, cycled 112 miles (more than Manchester to Brum and is then running more than a marathon! Just incredible!
-

13.11hrs :y
Go Matt, go Matt, go Matt.... :)

Go Matt, go Matt, go Matt.... :)
Obviously he's had a break during this last 4km ....... so I wasn't far wrong.
'only' 18 miles to go! ??? :y :y
-
Up to 18km in 14hours.
Average speed looks ok though. :-\
He must be feeling like hell by now :(
-
He doesn't appear to have finished :-\
Hope he's OK :-\
One hell of an achievement though, he must have travelled about 120miles further under his own steam than I could manage :o
-
Never mind Matt, always next time.
Ill even let you keep the sponsership money :y
-
Thanks for all your support guys. The bike course was gruelling, even for me. 16% inclines are just inhuman especially one after the other in quick succession. I only just made the cut off with seconds to spare My plan was to get in off the bike within 9 hours and then if I had to just walk the run but I came in at 10:29:20 ish which meant I had to push the run.
Unfortunately just before the halfway stage on the run abdominal cramps and D set in. I got 2km in to the 3rd lap (of 4) and the pain was too much which because of the crohns I was concerned. I had to be whisked to the medical centre to get medical attention and it was 90 mins before they would let me go. I am thoroughly disappointed but I need to go away and analyse the race and make sure I do better next time.
-
Never mind, Matt, you gave it a damned good shot and achieved more than most of us lard-arses could dream of. ;D
A tidy sum raised for charity, too. Plenty to be proud of, I'd say :y
-
Matt, don't be too disappointed! It was your first IM event and your performance is one to be proud of! :y
-
......
I am thoroughly disappointed but ....
Don't be. You entered & did you best ....... you can't ask for more than that! :y :y :y
-
Indeed 8) a bloody noble effort :y
Glad you're still in one piece :y you'll be aching for a fews days no doubt ::)
-
Fantastic effort Matt well done and be proud. :y
Now feet up, and few Beers. ;)
-
Well done Matt - as someone said "Its the taking part that counts!" :y :y
I was knackered just looking at the itinerary, let alone doing it.... :o
You did yourself proud!
-
Having done just a brief sample of what you did, with my London to Brighton cycle ride, you've no need to be disappointing :y
I could barely do that, you had so much more to do. Think you can be very proud at what you accomplished :y :y :y :y :y
-
Well done Matt on getting so far in your first Ironman race. I'm sure with this experience under your belt, you will do much better and complete the course next time. :y :y :y :y
A good local practice run for the hill climbing would be Aldershot to Hindhead. I used to do Sandhurst to Farnborough to meet up with other cyclists and then on to Hindhead on a Sunday morning when I was a member of the Farnborough and Camberley Cycling Club and it is a good long continuous climb, once the Hindhead side of Farnham. :y One of the shorter runs we used to do, but your legs really felt it from all of the climbing. :y
-
Well done Matt, noble effort, just glad to hear that you are in one piece, was rather concerned last night, kept checking progress report, thought you may have had cramp or something similar. Don't be disappointed, you did very well.
Next year you will fly through it.
